1.  They are paid whatever the route is provisioned at, not hourly like the city side carriers.
2.  Most rural routes carriers are required to use their own vehicle (there are some routes that use LLV (mail trucks), but not too many) and as such, if you get stuck, you are on your own to get it unstuck and pay for any repairs on your own.

I've seen the rural carriers driving personal vehicles, mostly when I'd be driving down in Iowa.  Never thought about the costs incurred if they get stuck or damaged.  I can see why that'd make a hell of a big difference in whether they'd go to a mailbox that was snowed in if it'd cost them a hundred bucks or more to get back out if they got stuck.

I've always had city mail carriers.  I try to clear my sidewalks for them well, but that sidewalk has gotten more and more narrow this winter.

I cant tell you how many times I've pulled my wife's 4wd Explorer out of drifts etc..
She's a go getter and likes to make sure people get their mail, especially ones she knows are are a little harder off (disabled, etc..) and can't make it to the post office very easily.
I'll bet I've saved us over $1000 in towing fees alone.  Luckily every time she's been stuck I've been home and not traveling.
As far as damages, transmission and brakes are things that go most often as far as big ticket items.  Starters are very common too, since any time they get out of their vehicle they are required to turn it off.

I wonder why they make them shut the car off every time they get out?  I don't think our city carriers do that, in the middle of winter their vans always seem to be running when they'd get out to walk.

But I think they skip some of the rules here and there to save time, or keep the van warm.  On the blocks where the mailboxes are on the houses I've been told they're not suppose to walk on the lawn unless they have permission.  If you see them with the bean counters following them you'll notice they don't, they go up and down the sidewalks.  But any other day they'll walk through every single yard in a strait line.

I don't blame them either, like any of other gig they're always getting pushed to deliver more and do it faster.

It's a safety issue.  City and Rural alike are supposed to turn off the vehicles.  Especially at CBUs (Those collection of mailboxes on the side of a road).  They have had a few people run over when their vehicle went into gear.
And any time they leave the vehicle they are to close and lock doors. For obvious theft reasons, but I have seen open vehicles in the summer a lot.
You are right, most of the time they will leave them run in the winter.
If you see someone following them, they are probably doing a review of the route or a mandatory review of the employee.   Then they follow the rules because they are being watched LOL.
Most of the time you will see them cut across lawns, I don't think most people mind as long as they are not trampling bushes and flowers etc...  But every now and again you get that one craba$$ who doesn't want their lawn walked on.

As for the LLVs (Mail Jeeps) they are the biggest pieces of crap since the Yugo. Another fleece job of the gov't whoever won that contract to provide them.  Ask any postal mechanic who works on 'em, ask any employee who drives them and you'll get more negative than positive comments.

 Most of the carriers are pretty good people and genuinely care about their customers.
Like most large businesses that get a bad rap it's because those that make the decisions have no clue about how the troops on the ground conduct that business but yet make decisions on how they should do their job.
The amount of stupid decisions that go on would blow your mind.
I've learned a lot since my wife started working their about 10 yrs ago.
Stuff I would have never considered before hand.

Well, it is private property and as such he can refuse the public access to it (including snow removal) unless other arrangements are/were made.

The turnaround has 70 years of continuous use and repair by the public and the township?

Land has been a turnaround my whole life..

160.05 DEDICATION OF ROADS.
Subdivision 1.Six years. When any road or portion of a road has been used and kept in repair and worked for at least six years continuously as a public highway by a road authority, it shall be deemed dedicated to the public to the width of the actual use and be and remain, until lawfully vacated, a public highway whether it has ever been established as a public highway or not.

Now they want to use the driveway and the front yard to remove snow or they will leave it in the road..
