New Laptop
Random questions
Posted on: Aug. 13 2009,10:52 pm by irisheyes

Okay, so I FINALLY got a new computer.  I took it out of the box tonight and started charging it.  Haven't really done much with it yet, still using the old desktop until I get some stuff set up on the laptop first.

Would appreciate some tips, specifically from those in the know (Grinning Dragon, Liberal, Geo, etc.), but anybody else too that wants to chime in.

1)  It has a 6-cell Lithium battery.  Do I need to let the battery run out the first couple times, like they used to say about cell phones, or doesn't it really matter?

2)  Should I make some recovery disks of the system, or is the recovery restore point system on Vista good enough that it's not a big deal?  It says I can restore to a previous point either way, but wasn't sure if I should make make some recovery DVD's anyway just in case.

Was also thinking about getting an external hard drive to back up the system now and then, but again wasn't sure if the restore point system is good enough that I don't need to worry about it.

3)  The Windows Defender prompt is kind of annoying how it keeps asking me if I want to open this or that every time I start a program.  Is there an easy to way to cut down on the notifications?

4)  A lot of people I know use those heat-pads with fans in them for laptops, but I've heard some say they think it doesn't really matter.  Any advice on what you all think on this?

5)  Bloatware.  Should I go through and just uninstall programs I know I won't use, or is there a different way to get rid of stuff I don't want and speed up the registry?

Thanks!  :D

RIP Les Paul
Guitar Legend Passes Away
Posted on: Aug. 13 2009,12:10 pm by Wareagle11B

94 years old and a legend in the music business.

From Wikipedia:

QUOTE
Lester William Polfuss, known as Les Paul (June 9, 1915 – August 13, 2009[1]) was an American jazz guitarist and inventor. He was a pioneer in the development of the solid-body electric guitar which "made the sound of rock and roll possible."[2] His many recording innovations included overdubbing, delay effects such as "sound on sound" and tape delay, phasing effects, and multitrack recording. He is often credited as being the 'father of modern music'.
