This thread is suppose to help us decide who should get our vote for sheriff. I would like to have facts that can be verified or authenticated by a county administration finanance employee. There have been a lot of numbers thrown out in the newspaper and on this forum. We all know what figures do. There are a few questions that I would like answered to make an informed decision. Why is the investigation into the missing money from the jail taking so long? Tuttle has already been in front of a judge. The talk of all the income from the jail has never been acompanied with the expenses of the jail. Somewhere in the county finance system there has to be an actual per cost per bed dollar amount. This report needs to include building expenses including utilities, wear, salaries, overtime pay, meals, etc. If more prisioners are going through then the facility will wear out quicker and cost more than expected when designed. If no report exists then there should be an external audit rather quickly so we all know. We also need to know what it is costing us to house our prisioners out of county and transportation costs. Mentioning transportation costs. I believe part of the ICE contract included transportation. Is that a money maker also? We don't need a spin from a commissioner we need facts. We keep hearing on how the new radio system is going to help with accidents, fires and disasters. Is the August time frame for operation on track and on budget? After each event we hear how it would have helped but no updates on installation progress. If it is not on time is the stretched out time going to cause outdated equipment and programs going to cause extra expense? When I was on a community committee looking at lowering budgets there were a few departments that had to submit annual reports to the board that included all of the money coming into and out of the department. These reports showed all of the federal, state, local, fees, etc. incomes and all of all the expenses paid out. If needed the dollars could be tracked who, when and where. Why doesn't the sheriff have to have a report like this so questions could be quickly addressed? Anything to hide? Law Enforcement has changed alot since the Holly Laak and even Nolander days. The jail was just a few cells and the sheriff's wife cooked the meals. Todays Law Enforcement department is a large tax burden on the few tax payers we have. A good law enforcement officer is not as important (that is why you hire qualified deputies and jailers) as being a good manager of resources they have. This includes money, people, equipment and volunteers. The sheriff needs to actively reduce costs, put more officers on the street and be in charge during disasters. Next time you see one of the candidates on the street don't asked what has been done in the past but what can you do for MY future. Don't be afraid to ask pointed questions.

Now you get my drift gijoeman! Yes, the legislature enacts the laws, but the Sheriff will decide what his departments priorities will be. If you don't like the priorities, vote for someone else. The Deputies perform their duties under the direction of the Sheriff. Being a Deputy has gotta be a tough job, worrying about job security every four years!!

Yes, all good points. The sheriff is really a public resource manager in this world. Trouble is, is that all these guys wanna do is create fear and then hire more cops and use even more resources. This seems to be the primary directive.

I was always a believer in fair and impartial enforcement. I don't believe I've ever heard those words used by any candidate for a long, long time.. Officer discretion was just that, the decision on what took place was left to the officer. For many people (violators) a good old fashioned butt chewing would work wonders versus getting a citation. The demand for revenue pretty much killed that art form, and the respect that many Officers in this area had actually earned over the years. The times? They do change, and not necessarily for the better..

I talked with my father. He can remember Laak wanting a new radio system for the Sheriff's Office he built during his administration, so they could all communicate in case of emergency. Then he says Nolander wanted a new radio system so they could all communicate in an emergency. Now we need another radio system so we can all communicate in an emergency. Was there a lot of non communication in the last emergency? Time goes on and we need updates, but everyone goes to cell phones for secrecy, and they all have the same frequencies on the radios already. Do we need new radios, I don't know, and I don't know who to believe, even after I ask. Does there seem to be excessive spending compared to population and taxes taken in?Yes. And what study showed we needed this jail? How many prisoners would Freeborn County have today, if they were incarcerated here? Our movement in this country should be for alterantive forms of punishment. Not to long ago, the Police Cheif said that he thought law enforcement in the area is less busy becasue we have less population and especially less at the offender age. You can get back your say in government by showing you want change in representation. You have three other canidates this time, change is good.
