Back to the original post about the new editor. I have to say I was not impressed. The first thing she did was take a tour of the new courthouse with Gabe. She came out of that meeting and wrote in the paper all of his propaganda concerning costs and the need for it. There was no other side of the story, there was nothing on how we paid 500,000 in interest this year needlessly. Nothing on the debate as to if we even needed a new courthouse. It just seemed like more of the same, a local politician gives them a story and instead of checking on the facts and trying to get an opposing view, they take the politician at his word and print only what they are told. They dont report on a story, they relay it.

Ya, but didn't you read that she mentioned at least twice that she was forming a completely INDEPENDENT decision. LOL

So, I take it you feel she was pulling your leg then... :D

No, I guess I believe her, Im just saying before she printed the story she should have done some homework and printed the other side of the story. Her opinion doesnt really matter, the facts is what matters, if she only prints one side of the story, how are we supposed to form an opinion if we dont get all the info?
Just dont always believe what the politician tells you is the whole truth. The politicians made the decision to build the courthouse, now everything we hear is the politicians trying to justify that decision. For that reason, I think they should do some checking on their own instaed of printing word for word what they are told.

I completely agree with Hoosier.  I have to say that while Dylan was a pain at times one of his last editorials got him assisted to his new ventures.  He started to  do some real reporting.  Problem there was he was not as objective as he should have been and he got down in the mud slinging it with the best of them.  The new editor is not doing that but she has written what she was "supposed" to write.  She does appear much more away from the fray than Dylan though.  I think it is probably the same ole dog doo, different day.

If her musings about rummage sales in the sunday paper is any indication of what we can expect from her i think we will be sorley disappointed! She needs to get out & get her feet wet so to speak. I for one am not interested in her views of rummaage sales! There seems to be enough viable topics for her to explore with out resorting to meanenly less gibrish! Perhaps the publisher has informed her to tred softly as they need the advertising! How about getting out there & ask the hard questions. For instance, what about the $400,000 sludge problem, the issue of the loans? to the Chamber, the issue of the city & greater jobs. i think you can get the jest of what i am getting at. Perhaps the new city manager can put a stop to this catering to the select few! I have had a face to face discussion with the new editor &  i realize it takes a little while to get her feet on the ground. I just hope it is not business as usual at the Tribune! They have a oppotunity here to start fresh but then again polotics enter the picture & we all know how that turns out!

Compared to Dylan she's a great editor. And I can see how she doesn't want to just jump into the middle of everything.

She wrote an editorial a couple weeks ago about putting the council meetings on TV and then a couple days later she wrote another editorial explaning how she must be doing her job because of the number of calls she received about the first editorial.  It seemed to me she was just letting people know that phone calls weren't going to change her opinion on things and in my opinion that's exactly the type of editor we need.

I can agree with that Liberal, the jury is still out in my opinion.
But compared to Dylan, all the kids that work on high school newspapers would be better editors than he was, lol.
She could still win me over, im just saying that saying she is better than Beldan isnt saying a whole lot now is it?

Why should she report about the dead issue of money spent in interest?  It has been beat to death.  She was offered a tour of the courthouse when she was out meeting people.  She didn't say she backed the courthouse or anything.  She only stated she was impressed.  Did anyone on the other side offer to take her on a tour and give their side or take her to the sludge area and get their side?  Get over it.

Collector, that in a nutshell is the problem.  Each new venture that our city and county has undertaken costing the taxpayers money without real input from those constituents has caused an ever deepening division between our officials and the residents of both the City and County.  A vast majority of the residents feel that they have no real say.  Do you recall the Albert Lea listens seminars.  Residents were invited to attend a meeting where they were told but not listened to.  The wounds are deep and getting over it is not going to cut it and I think you know that.  In fact that is a pretty callous thing to say.

Yes.

Advocate--a very succinct summation of the deepening division.
