great, now we should pay the commisioners, who are part time, more than the full time administartor. So lets pay the four $100,000 each a year. That's what, $80,000 a year extra for all four. That's what $320,000 extra a year. Where should they cut the budget to come up with that jing?

Nobody said $100,000, so that is NOT "$80,000 a year extra for all four" (actually, there are FIVE commissioners--it just SEEMS that way because the 4 just vote together!).
The job of County Commissioner is difficult--I'm sure it takes up half of their time. $20,000 a year divided by 1000 hours equals $20 an hour--compare that with what you pay to get your car, your phone, or your computer fixed--or any other goods or services. They aren't getting rich from the wages on this job.
Making this a half-time job with half-time pay means that only the rich, retired, or otherwise unemployed can afford to take this job. I agree with Liberal--it would be great if qualified people would take the job motivated solely by community spirit--volunteers are always welcome. Volunteers can't do everything, though, and it is hard to hold them accountable--sometimes we have to pay a salary to make them accountable. Example: It would be nice if we could get by with "volunteers" for County Administrator, and other County offices--but we seem to feel that THOSE positions should be full-time and salaried. If it takes more money to get better people, it is better than putting up with mediocrity.

Its not difficult the way they do it. Belshan just votes against everything and the other four vote for everything. Nothing difficult about that or time consuming. You spend the same time at the meetings as they do. I'm sure if I sat there I could just supply all 5 votes with the same outcome.

The only thing that would prevent any normal person from taking the postition is that they meet during the day. Change that to evening meetings and anyone with a 9-5 job can take it.
You all complain. Why don't you run. If you really want to change something get a campain together and run. Bitching all the time doesn't change a thing.

It's like you're saying, "ha, ha, ha," we got the power and you don't, so we'll do as WE please. Why don't you grab the power?"
That's just sad and a little sick.

Why make cuts when all they need to do is get a 4-1 vote to increase taxes to the local businesses that are privately owned. Brad Haugen's comments in todays paper say it all. Their theory is to increase their own wages (because nobody is going to want to run for the position on the salaries that they were making....how humbling of them!!!) and increase taxes for the business owners hauling gravel and decrease their competiveness.

Springborg lied and changed the balance of power costing every citizen in the county the equivalent of several new cars.
They call him Springborg because he's easy to bounce taxpayer money off of.

At yesterday's board meeting, Gabrielsen reported to the board that labor negotiations where at an impass with the human services' union. The county's final offer was a two year contract with a 1% increase in pay for 2004 and a 1 1/2% for 2005. The union's final offer was a 1% for 2004 and a 2% raise for 2005.
Gabrielsen was adamant that the board agree and pass the union's request for the pay increase. He stated that the negotiations were over and if the board didn't take the union's offer, they would be forced into arbitration, which would cause the county to hire an attorney for the arbitrations.
The board didn't buckle under Ron's continuous pleas. My question is: doesn't Gabrielsen have any faith in Nelson? After all, he hired an outside attorney to give him opinions on how the board should conduct business, he hired the same attorney to defend the county against the lawsuit brought against them, and now he tells the board that he'll have to hire another attnoney to arbitrate with the union.

Remember Nelson is a prosecuter not a defender.
