It is easy to say you won't take money when it comes from another source.  Belshan gets approximately $45,000+ annually from the "Farm Bill".  Check out the following website under Farm Subsidy Database that tells how much:

Another opinion, what does Dan Belshans farming operation have to do with his position as a County Commissioner?  He is representing the constituents of his District and voting on issues surrounding that, not his farming business.  Perhaps if he had a vote on a bill concerning that it would matter.  He has a vote on County matters that do not reference his farming business.  He is a target of those individuals that he has in essence voted against.  Therefore, you are attempting to incorporate his personal business into County business and   you are being very transparent at best.   You may not like the mans politics but he is intelligent and persistent, you gotta give him that.

another opinion-  You neglected to mention that their are 2 other commissioner's on that site.  In fact, Behrends came out ahead of Belshan.  The only commissioners not mentioned in searches were Dave Mullenbach and Dan Springborg.
Your explanantion is its "easy to turn down money when it comes from another source".  If thats true than why was Belshan the only one that turned it down last year?

"Albert Lea residents favor tax increase"

Just another reminder that we live in the wrong place. A place full of old factory democrats who can't just say, "no new taxes".

Sadly, it won't end until they're all gone.

Belshan is not the only commissioner to take the health insurance offered.  Glen Mathiason does also.

Are you people actually suggesting that we shouldn't offer county commissioners insurance benefits? Who would take a job that pays $20K a year with no benefits?

Eventually this county will figure out that you get what you pay for and they will raise the commissioners salaries and then maybe we will start to see qualified people seeking office.

so you don't want the actual workers to get their big 1% raise at the county and 3% at the City, yet we should jack up the pay for the people who make the bad decisions?  Or are you just looking for a second job that will pay a little more?

Liberal has a good thought, here.  I find it odd that the Commissioners are the lowest paid County employees.  I would GLADLY pay more for good people.  I don't think Freeborn County needs full-time, career Commissioners, but if paying more meant getting better people--and holding those people ACCOUNTABLE--I'd be for it.

It also might help keep Gabe from leading the Commissioners around by the nose--after all, he makes about 4 times what they do!  No wonder he forgets that HE is supposed to be working for THEM!  :p
