Did you all see the paper yesterday where Mark Berhends said they have nothing more to cut in county government? What a bunch of $hit! I totally agree with Dan Belshan, they should have used the citizen committees recomendations and forced the department heads to cut 15 percent from their budget. Instead, the four idiots sat there at a board meeting and let the department heads tell them that they couldnt just cut across the board, but that they have a way to do it. Well guess what? The department heads had no idea what they were doing, other than trying to save their own budget and their own job, but had no affect at all on helping reduce the budget. I was at this meeting, the four idiots sat there and were totally intimidated by every department head that came up and said they had nothing to cut. Be very clear on this folks, we arent in this mess because of money, or the lack of it. We are in this mess because our elected officials decided to pass the buck, they decided they werent capable of doing the job they were elected to do, and they did one hell of job showing it also.
This is for anyone that has ever attended a county board meeting. Have you ever once seen one of the four idiots deny a request for money? I havent, other than Belshan. And even he isnt always against money being spent on certain things, he just wants to find the money before he commits to spending it. You know, kind of like what you and I do everyday, you have a budget you have to stick by, if you want to spend on something extra, like a vacation, you have to cut somewhere else in the budget to get the money. Pretty damn simple isnt it? Why is it that all these business men and farmers that get elected all the sudden cant handle finances? You know they dont live their lives like this, they dont spend money they dont have, they have a budget that they cant go over. But as soon as they have our money in their hands they all the sudden become stupid. In this case though I dont think its just stupidity, it borders on incompedence.

Good post Hoosier!  This is the typical "knee-jerk" response of big government advocates.

Why would we ask the department heads if they can make any more cuts?  It's like Santa asking kids if they deserve a lump of coal for Christmas... ???

Think about though. How can they insist department heads cut back when they just used lease revenue bonds with NO LEASE REVENUE coming in.

Just move Hoosier...you'll never change that retarded town....and once you do get away, you'll be glad you did.

It amazes me there is even a town left down there.  Well, guess it isn't much of a town.

LOL, I know what you all mean, but I shouldnt have to move to another town to get better government. I realize that this is what it may take, I just hope that come next November the people of this county take a step in the direction of changing the way things are done. You can always hope,  :D

But really, if you look at the things the department heads offered, these are cost cutting measures that should be implemented all the time, why do they wait until we are broke until they decide to come up with some cost saving ideas? If the county board would have had some collective balls they would have just told them, "cut 15 percent from your budget." End of discussion.
One last thing, doesnt it piss you off to hear about budget troubles and have to drive by that 40 million dollar piece of $hit uptown everyday?

If there's anyone out there who knows a thing or two about making cuts, it's Dennis Green. Remember what he did as coach of the Vikings? All those high-profile veterans who had served the team loyally for so many years? The Sheriff cut their kiesters without blinking an eye.

Freeborn County  needs to enlist the assistance of the Sheriff on this one, boys.

Freeborn County needs Dennis Green.

Good one, Hoosier--that should be the campaign slogan for every challenger to the incumbent County Commissioners next fall.  It should be viewed as a $40,000,000 billboard for their opponents--proof of their putting their own opinions in front of their constituents.

Anybody notice the news about Olmsted County--$6 million dollar work release center for 60 men and 30 women, plus a large, unfinished room for more cells--only slightly less than the 120 bed facility we got for $40,000,000.  To be fair, we got a couple of courtrooms, too--to replace the ones that will be torn down in the 1954 building.

Of course, they didn't have the foresight to use lease-revenue bonds like our Commissioners did.

From todays Trib.
Quote
Mullenbach said he wanted the $600 raise to be available to his predecessor
I think he  meant successor--why would you give a raise to the guy that preceeded you?

Last year, Belshan tried to refuse his raise.  Gabrielson gave him all kinds of reasons that he couldn't, and Belshan's motion was voted down with the usual 4-1 vote.  This year, it passed--maybe they will start seeing that he DOES have some good ideas--maybe there is hope for this bunch, yet! :D
