Vicki, nice post, but I don't think Tony is the answer. He seems to sway back and forth too much. I think it's great you ran for office. Whose district are you in? Care to run again?

Bob Dole must subscribe to the Tribune--"Hear no evil, print no evil". "If we ignore our problems, they'll just go away". The continued head-in-the-sand attitude of our local paper--the refusal to report or opine about what REALLY goes on in the community is what gives rise to coffee-shop talk, dissatisfaction, and distrust of public officials. There wouldn't be a Discussion Forum if there was open reporting and communication. This is a FORUM, Bob, ideas expressed here, discussed, critiqued, defended. If you want a cheering section, I suggest the Chamber of Commerce.
Just which of the points made here do you disagree with, Bob? Posters question Pam's performance--and the numbers don't look good. Was moving across the State line--while continuing to work for the Development Center the right thing to do? You criticize the critics, but I don't see you putting up numbers in Pam's defense. C'mon, prove these guys wrong, MAKE THE CASE FOR PAM!
Quote | are you willing or able to do what you are so quick to tell others they can't? | Are you saying that we have the BEST County Administrator or Business Developer for the job? Is it your contention that to be critical of an elected official, that you have to be willing to take that official's place? If so, you shouldn't be critical of Presidents Clinton or Bush--oh, wait, YOU WANTED THAT JOB!

Bob, you got my vote way back went, but I think you have slipped a little since then. We had a packing house that used to employ more than 1,000 people. It hit hard times and the last go around it was employing 300 people and growing. Then it caught fire and the site was cleared.
The town is now on its bum, with every factory laying off or closing, and our city leaders have come up with a plan to redevelop the packing house site as a WATER PARK. Now if you are looking at the matter from a jobs stand point, we are really going some place. If this goes through we might be able to offer 11 teenagers partime employment over the 3 months of summer as life guards. I don't care who's idea it was, IT SUCKS!

I ran for county commissioner against Ron Kraus and Mark Behrends in the Fifth District. I can publicly state that I would have voted no on the courthouse issue. I can solidify that response with the fact that during my grassroots, door to door campaign, neither I nor any of my volunteers ever once heard that any constituent we talked with wanted a new courthouse. I have always felt and continue to feel that my voice would be the voice of the people. I have been carefully monitoring the county board meeting and am most disheartened at the level of personal attacks. All of the commissioners, each and every one of them need to prioritize and know that the issues are not personal and about them. To stay above the fray is most important. I really do not know at this time if I would ever run for public office again. I can however, say I love Albert Lea and Freeborn County and want only the best for this beautiful place and the people that live here. I read in the paper the other day that stories about growing up in Albert Lea are being sought out for a book entitled "Albert Lea Remembers" and I think I might start writing about a time and place when I was young and carefree.

Vicki, I agree with MADDOG that if you would run again you would be good for the community. How ever I don't have the same feeling that you have for Soapy. He reminds me of past demagogs. Shallow and working for his desired adulation through other peoples dark side.

Cleaning out this mess is only 1/2 the problem, some one needs to get busy working to find that new group of leaders that can identify the goals, while having the determination to stick it out until the goals are achieved. I would agree that a quick fix knee jerk isn't the answer, and will only bring future problems.

How about posting an ad--"Rural Minnesota County has anticipated openings this fall for 3 County Commissioners--and a County Administrator. Anticipated starting date--First Tuesday after the First Monday in November. While in the past, people skills, diplomacy, ability to work with budgets, independent thinking, powers of observation, ability to obey the law, and ability to work unsupervised were NOT required--emphasis will be placed on these qualities this time. Salary $24,000 to $100,000 per year. You will take direction from approximately 6,500 people. Applicant MUST be a resident of the District represented, AND promise to stay there. If interested, please contact this number for application. Successful applicants will be selected Nov. 2 for Commissioners, Nov. 3 for Administrator."
Let good people know that there will be an opening, AND that you will support them!

you know sometimes I wonder if Albert lea citizens or gov't even want to grow. With our size and location, we had or maybe still have the chance to be a major regional center. there seems to be 2 classes of regional centers and I think Albert lea sits about in the middle of them, we could go either way. On the high end, the major centers in order you have Duluth, Rochester, St. Cloud, Mankato and possibly Willmar and Owatonna. In the minor group you have Winona, Albert lea, Austin, Marshall, Brainerd, Hutchinson, Red Wing, New Ulm, Fairmont, Worthington. In 10-20 years, will we be more like Willmar-Owatonna or more like Hutchinson-Red Wing???? I know some are vocal in here about growth but sometimes I think people in general around here are just content with same ol same ol

ok Viki I mean no personal disrespect to you but Tony Trow would be no better and perhaps even worse than the fools we have in office already. I met Tony during his door to door campaign and he promised me the world and told me what his views are on everything. To date he has done the opposite of everything that he told me. He would be a good polititian but that is about it and we already have enough of those in office just here in Albert Lea let alone Freeborn County.
