Yup that be overkill Overgaard.  The same fellow that was the reported to be the owner of Durenberger's St. Paul Condo.  He paid a big price for being a pall to the Senator but it might not have been enough to give him back his good name, and that would be unfortunate for Albert Lea if he is going to be a spokes person for the town's development.

Paul Overgard was Dave Durenburgers campaign manager. Durenburger turned on Overgard during the Senate  hearings and made him a scapegoat. Paul Overgard has always done an excellent job for the citizens in Freeborn County  and, if anything, his sin was that he was too trusting. Many long  time residents of Freeborn County remember Mr. Overgard representing his constituents very well in St. Paul. I would love to know how long some of the writers on this post who so loosely throw around accusations and distorted facts, have lived in the area?

Your right, TEE, he was his campaign manager.  As I recall what happened was HE had Durenberger sign over a condo that Dave owned.  There was no monetary transaction, just papers to make it look like Paul owned it.  Then Dave billed the Senate for rent he was paying (actually to himself)  Paul tried to take the fall for it.

Goodyear Pimp--good points, industrial jobs and tourist jobs are not mutually exclusive.

Good points on the educational scene as well.  Riverland technical college hasn't had a great ability to turn out workers for local industry, or to place students in the jobs they were trained for.  A number of students there are there for "job-retraining" programs--go to school, receive benefits, then find other jobs.

For a number of years, we have tried to work with Riverland on two fronts--pilot post-secondary education, and aviation mechanics.  There is nothing in it for our business, but it would be good for the community, and take advantage of the fact that there is no Community College located closer to an airport than this one.

On the pilot post-secondary side, a number of Albert Lea students leave the community for other aviation schools--primarily Mankato, St. Cloud, and Grand Forks.  MN. Aviation (the flight school in Albert Lea) already has the largest flight school in outstate MN., and was looking for a college affiliate to satisfy requests from full-time students and GI Bill students.  MN Aviation does a large amount of flight training for Mankato State, Purdue, and So. Illinois University.  A meeting was held to explore adding to Riverland's curriculum.  No additional equipment would be needed at Riverland, classes would be taught by MN Aviations FAA certified ground instructors, and students would be enrolled in Riverlands other courses toward their degree.  It was anticipated that initially, 50-75 students per year would enroll.

For the mechanic program, students are required to attend 18 months of classes for an airframe or powerplant certification, or 30 months for both.  There would be very little expense in instituting the program--they already have classes in metalworking, blueprint reading, etc., as well as engine run-up shops, compressed air, etc.  Surplus military aircraft are available for free for educational purposes.   Students are required to have only basic hand tools.  Mechanic schools already exist in Winona, Thief River Falls, and Hennepin County.  Any airframe and powerplant mechanic that has held a license for 3 years can teach the course--I have several ex-employees teaching at schools.  Anticipated number of students per year--20--times 2 1/2 years per student=50 people in town for this course.

The problem came with MNSCU--an association of State educational institutions.  Other colleges feared loss of students for their programs.  Under MNSCU, a "consensus" must be reached--if one school vetoes the new program it may be over-ridden, but it is virtually impossible to override two.  Both programs ran afoul of educational program jealousy.

These programs would have brought 100 students per year to Albert Lea--some fresh out of High School, some already married, some as job retrainees--think of the impact of 100 new students/families.  It would have provided an educational opportunity right here at home, instead of exporting our kids to other communities.  It would have given those people a chance to save money on their education.  The educational opportunities would have enhanced our standing as a place to live.  It would have added 7 new instructors jobs at the school--BUT IT WON'T HAPPEN BECAUSE OTHER COMMUNITIES VOTED DOWN RIVERLAND'S PROPOSAL.

MN. Aviation was able to get pilot certification through Salt Lake Community College--a college that recognizes attainment of the FAA written and practical exams for issuance of college credit.  These credits are transferrable to any other NCC college.

Students seeking airframe and powerplant certification still go out of town.

This school program parochialism isn't limited to aviation--the Riverland people investigated Vetinary Science programs, and were vetoed by Ely.  In other words, the only new programs available at Riverland are the programs nobody else wants!

TEE you are right, Paul is a good man and has been good to this community.  That being said, he can not spear head this communities efforts at redevelopment.  His support and participation would be most valuable, and should be welcomed, but his out front leadership should be discouraged.  I wish it were different, but that is not the world we live in.

We have heard from many of you, who you think can-not lead this communities redevelopment, but have any of you thought about who could?  Any of you free of personal flaws, and possessing the leadership qualities to make this place go again?  What about it BeBack, jimhason, MADDOG, Liberal, To A TEE, Dragon, all of the various GUESTs, and even minnow and his fan, are you willing or able to do what you are so quick to tell others they can't?  If you are not, do you have any idea how to get where you want to go?  Can you be of help or are you too busy knocking this place a part?

Geez Bob I think that Viagra has gone to the wrong head  :p

I am just busy knocking this apart.  I can think of quite a few individuals that would do a better job than the queen of shame, but I think they would ask for an annual salary far greater than that what would be offered.  So I guess you get what you pay for, pay crap wages get a crappy person.

Are you talking to me?  You got the wrong pimp Jim!

That is frustrating to hear that about MNSCU.  When Minnesota State caught wind that Rochester was going to get a U of M branch campus (not even a full fledged campus) they raised all sorts of hell making the same claims you made (losing students, etc).  I don't understand how you can compare a established University with 14,000 students to a new branch campus 2 hours away.  This year MSU had record enrollments & there are plans to build more dorms in the near future to expand the campus even further.  Doesn't look like the Rochester school is hurting them much.  It comes down to competition & choices.  Both are great for students and isn't that who is really important?

Bob Dole, thank you for challenging us.  I think that Tony Trow  would be perfect for the job.  This position is not about popularity or even saying the right things to the masses, it is about results.  This man is highly educated, informed, traveled and experienced.; that makes him both formidable and intimidating...a lethal combination.  He has the energy and smarts to take this town and county where we should have been years ago.  And by the way, I have put my money where my mouth is I did run for county commissioner a few years back.

If that's true about Trow, then why does he keep a old truck on his property that leaks fluid everywhere?

That sounds more like Fred Sanford than who you decribed.
