The Pioneer Press ran a story about a poker tournament in St. Cloud being raided. They say in the story that this is a growing problem in the state and that they have recieved complaints from Albert Lea?

Quote

The raid probably won't be the last as Texas Hold'em tournaments grow in popularity, driven by television shows, such as "Celebrity Poker Showdown." The number of complaints to investigators has increased.

"We're getting lots of Texas Hold'em complaints," White said. "It's from Albert Lea to St. Cloud to everywhere."

During the raid Monday, about 43 people were temporarily detained while investigators raided the bowling alley's bar area. St. Cloud police officers helped officers from the state's alcohol and gambling enforcement division.

Officers identified and then let the patrons go. They also seized some items considered gambling paraphernalia.

Generally, businesses that profit from such gambling-related ventures could be breaking the law, White said. That's because they profited, such as through an increase in food or drink sales, White said.

Because Texas Hold'em isn't considered a game of skill, it doesn't fall into the same category as dart, pool and golf tournaments, White said.

"If someone is making money from doing something here, then it's probably not legal," White said.

Who would think that a poker tournament that gives away hats and t-shirts would be illegal?

And poker isn't a game of skill and stategy?  Then how come I know good poker players, and the ones I want to play against?  And they insinuate that it must be the luck of the draw?  Well sure it is to a point.  But I've played darts, pool, and golf, and trust me, there's a lot of luck in those games too.

You have to know when to draw, what to discard, and how to bet, let alone have that good old poker face.  :D   You got to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em.   :p

I have heard that they got busted in Glenville either last weekend or the weekend before last, the problem is the state is involved in gambling and they don't want to share one thin dime with anybody else---THEY WANT IT ALL

Maddog,
I'm not really the country club type, nor a member of the Elks, but seeing as they are "private" clubs, can they get away with that kind of activity?  Ya just dont see too many people playing cards out in the open.    Do they do the same thing at the Eagles?  Also seeing as Geo got popped flipping a quarter, can someone get locked up for playing dice for drinks?  I don't knwo what you call it here, but I have seen it being played and even won a few times myself. 0 =)

And all this is happening in the good ole U.S.A. Land of the free(my a$$) The biggest thing about the gambling business is that the state is running the game and like the mafia is not going to let anyone in on the take---that is just great folks--- the goverement will take care of you, they know what you need and they will watch your money, and if they can't get enough---well, there can always be another law to help us. :p
