I'm not going to go through a bunch of your links.  What I simply want is what is the tax on a $100,000 house in Albert Lea compared to the tax on a house which is similar in size and what it has (not market value) in these other areas.  Don't simply take a $100,000 house in all areas because it is not the same.  Trust me, what you can get in Albert Lea for $100,000 is much better than you can get in Owatonna, Faribault, Austin, etc.

(Maddog)  In doing a comparative study of surrounding counties and how much property taxes have been raised, you can see just how well our current county board has towed the line on spending.
I believe Maddogs point here was that taxes and spending have increased far out of proportion to those of nearby counties.  This begs the question--"What have we spent this much additional money on?"  It would be interesting to know.

Any way you slice it, only Rice County (barely) levies more money than Freeborn.  Mower County levies 50% less, and Waseca and Faribault counties levy HALF.

The leading question in this thread is "Did your property taxes go up?"  If Guest wants to redefine the question as "Were property taxes too low to begin with", or "yeah, but $100,000 buys you more here than there", then Guest should come up with the figures to support his contention.

maybe madpup and jimmy should realize that there is more than their side of a story or idea.  Does is show anywhere what the state reduced each counties local government aid so you can too compare that?  Oh wait, I get it.  If anyone has the audacity to question the great and all knowing mad dog and jimhanson then they shall be wrong for just questioning and sent to live with the lepers.

Point well taken, Jim.  Also, you can look at census numbers for each county.

Faribault    2000 pop. 16,055
Freeborn    2000 pop. 32,569
Mower       2000 pop. 38,603
Rice          2000 pop. 56,665
Steele       2000 pop. 33,680
Waseca     2000 pop. 19,526

Now, if the 2000 census remaned the same for 2004 (obviously didn't) the average amount of property tax paid by every county resident would break down as such.

Faribault    $339/person
Freeborn    $375/person
Mower       $234/person
Rice          $224/person
Steele       $352/person
Waseca     $358/person

Any way you slice it, Freeborn county residents pay more taxes.  And remember, our county population is in decline.  Faribault county is the only other county that's declining.

Guest--you sound like the little boy tugging at mothers skirt, trying to interject irrelevant material into adult conversation.  Maddog posted figures showing the comparative levy on surrounding counties--showing not only the RATE of increase, but that in ACTUAL DOLLARS.  We spend more than any nearby county except Rice.  You asked rhetorical question regarding "what kind of house you can buy here compared to somewhere else" (has nothing to do with the rate of growth of spending, or of comparative spending, of county government)--something that had nothing to do with the original question of "Did your taxes go up" or the figures Maddog provided for you.  Maddog was even nice enough to provide links to the data, so you could make your point--but you couldn't be bothered to look up facts.

Nobody is banishing you, but you have provided no support for your statements.  If you disagree with a post, provide your own facts to support your claim.  Attempting to change the subject, or to just snipe from the weeds,  is meaningless.  If you can't contribute and are unable to participate in a dialogue, you're just taking up space.  Supply figures to make your point, listen up, or leave.

It's still more complicated than that.
You still haven't looked at where market/taxable valuations increased/decreased.
That's really an important part of the picture, too.

BS, ya can't piss $40,000,000 down the drain, and then claim that wasn't a factor. LOL  :D

The city...the county is out of control. A blind man could see it.

Increased taxes hurt economies...just look around. Can't you see what you've done?
