there is a little law about any campaign material being located on public property

Someone should have probably told Mullenbach as he announced he was running for commissioner from the courthouse lawn.

Mullenbach announces he'll run again

By Masaaki Harada, Tribune staff writer

Incumbent County Commissioner Dave Mullenbach announced his candidacy for reelection Monday, pledging his commitment to progress.

Surrounded by supporters at the old courthouse yard, Mullenbach said, "The complex issues we in Freeborn County face over the next four years won't be easy to solve. However, I pledge to do whatever it takes to serve all the residents of Freeborn County."

Mullenbach emphasized his experience as a board member, which includes two terms of chairmanship and positive working relations with political leaders ranging from township officials to national legislators.

"As your county commissioner, I will continue to make myself available to listen to your concerns, continue to devote my energies to address the problems you face," Mullenbach said. "And above all, continue to commit the time needed to ensure we overcome every challenge and make progress in the years ahead."

The fourth district Mullenbach represents consists of Precinct Two of Albert Lea Township, and Ward One and Two of the City of Albert Lea. He won the last general election in 1998, defeating incumbent Diane Landaas in the final. Four candidates fought in the primary.

In this election, so far, former county administrator Truman Thrond has announced his candidacy. Thrond leads a group that opposes the demolition of the 1954 courthouse annex, asserting that excessive spending would result in higher taxes. The dispute revolves around the county's courthouse plans, including a new court and jail facility that will be built to the south of the courthouse.

Though he avoided touching the Œ54 building issue in particular, Mullenbach said, "We need to continue to move forward. We have to come up with a good, long-lasting plan that will last 75 years so that we won't have to do it again in 20 years."
