Hold on to your toilet seats!! Here are the latest numbers for the month ending September 25, 2003 given by the construction management firm overseeing the courthouse/jail/LEC construction.
Freeborn County Government Center Snap Shot Construction Budget Update to the Board of Commissioners
1 Current Percentage Complete 29%
2 County Approved Budget $25,729,236.00
3 Total Paid to Date $9,242,007.00
4 Balance of Committed Costs $16,408,054.00
5 Contingency Balance $79,175.00 Contingency does not include any rebates that have been identified to date- Approx. $513,000
Fact:The County bonded the total amount for construction November 15, 2002 at an average interest cost of 4.6% and we are reinvesting the unspent money receiving an ave of 1.25% interest creating a cost to the County of aprox 3.35% interest on any of the money not yet needed for the construction ($16,408,054.00) number 4 above.
If the County had bonded $9,242,007.00 last November and then waited until now and bonded this September for the balance ($16,408,054.00) the savings in interest to the county would be approximately $458,058.00.
My opinion: In other words, we've flushed almost 1/2 million dollars down the toilet. It would take more than 254 years of advertising touted by our county staff to recoup the interest costs lost in the last 10 months had we just done some research on bonding. Is saving pennies now necessary because common sense wasn't used previously? Where were the heads of the people who now make a big splash about saving taxpayer dollars by advertising in county toilets when they were in such a hurry to spend taxpayer dollars previously. Perhaps they had constipation of the brain.

Is this legal?
"We're going to be real careful about the advertising that goes up," says Jensen, "anything that's inappropriate or the county deems inappropriate we won't do it."
Oh I see...THEY...not the law, dictates just exactly who and what can be advertised! That can't be legal.
I'd like to advertise our view on specific issues...can we do that? It'll give Gabe something to read while he's sitting on the stool dumping a load.

I attended the meeting and I must admit, when Gabrielson stated any money received through bathroom advertisement was that much less tax dollars that needed to be levied, I about fell off my frickin chair.
Someone should tell Gab that sometimes it's better to keep one's mouth shut than to open it and have stupidity spill out.
That was the most rediculous thing I ever heard.

$1800 a year, that's about 8 days of Gabe's salary. It would take about 47 years of advertising to pay Gabe's salary for one year!

The only one that would end up paying for ad's would be bail bondsmen and I believe there are only a couple of them in town right now.
It's pretty sad to see our city and county suggesting this kind of tactic to recoup "anything" for any reason.
Ok ... my mortgage is due soon so I think I will go looking for shiney objects in Walmarts parking lot now

At the same meeting, a report was delivered on the "pay to stay" (in jail) program. NOTHING has been collected to date!
"FROM THE SAME PEOPLE THAT GAVE YOU "PAY TO STAY", NOW WE'RE TALKING ABOUT "PAY TO PEE"!
What next, pay toilets?

From the "Sages of Liverpool"--the Beatles--life imitates art.
Quote | Let me tell you how it will be There's one for you, nineteen for me 'Cause I'm the taxman, yeah, I'm the taxman
Should five per cent appear too small Be thankful I don't take it all 'Cause I'm the taxman, yeah I'm the taxman
If you drive a car, I'll tax the street, If you try to sit, I'll tax your seat. If you get too cold I'll tax the heat, If you take a walk, I'll tax your feet. Taxman
'Cause I'm the taxman, yeah, I'm the taxman
Don't ask me what I want it for (ah,ah Mr. Wilson) If you don't want to pay some more (ah,ah Mr. Heath) 'Cause I'm the taxman, yeah, I'm the taxman
Now my advice for those who die Declare the pennies on your eyes 'Cause I'm the taxman, yeah, I'm the taxman And you're working for no one but me. |
