Jim, nice post on the names and nicknames, you explained it well. Remember when we first got started on the Tribune forum you said you wished you hadnt used your real name either, but it was to late to go back. To tell you the truth, I have no problem using my name, people can come after me all they want. I just dont want it to affect my wife and her business. Warren, if you dont like the fact that people use nicknames, do something about the powers that be that make people leary of using their real name. Its a sad commentary on this town that people have to feel that way, that they cant give their honest opinion in their name and let it go at that. For me, it takes nothing away from someones post if they use their nickname, as amatter of fact, it makes me wonder about the people that do use their name, and address, and phone number, dogs name, ect, ect, ect. Who the hell you trying to impress? By the way Jim, I was not talking about you in that last comment, dont take it that way.

Lisa Marie, do you live in AL or the surrounding area?  Rochester has a much higher cost of living than AL does.  People with the same job you have in Rochester are probably living the same lifestyle as you.

The only problem with that Hoosier is with gas prices the way they are would it be any more profitable for her.  Plus think of the wear and tear on her vehicle.

Rochester also has to pay more to even attract applicants, let alone retain their employees.  They have more opportunities - if you don't like working for A, you can go work for B or C because they all need workers.

Wal-Mart had to delay building their store on the south side because they couldn't get enough applicants to open the store.  They had to raise their wages to attract workers.

But see, that's exactly my point!  You CAN'T make a decent living in Albert Lea!  You have to go at least an hour away to make any money!  Even for skilled, educated positions!

But a decent living here wouldn't be a decent living there because costs are much higher ex. rent.  So basically you wouldn't have extra income in your pocket over there either because your bills would be that much higher.

You are so right LisaMarie. I went back to school myself last year. My wife has a very good job here in AL. She is an eye doctor for the Albert Lea clinic, we arent going to leave Albert Lea for my job. Thats the problem, I can understand how the kids feel getting ready to get out of high school and go to college, what proffesion can you get into that you will be able to come back to your home town and do? I think people want to stay here, sometimes there just isnt anything for em here though. Unless you want to go to college for 8 years like my wife did, but most 2 or 4 year educations arent going to get you much in this town. Why do you think the hog plants like us, we have become a low wage, non skilled workforce and town. Our city and county leaders should hang their heads when they walk among us, they caused it, they have no idea how to fix it.

Tiger, I have a friend at work who used to live and work in Rochester doing the same job she is now.  She was the breadwinner for her family, and they had no problems making ends meet.  Now that she's in Albert Lea (to be closer to her family) they're having a really hard time making it, and she's had to get a second job just to pay the bills.

Did they buy a bigger house or have more kids?  Does her husband have a job similar to what he was doing in Rochester?  It's a sad thing when people struggle to eat and I wish your friend the best.  But I think your friend might be in the minority.  I think if you compared most jobs from AL to Rochester the pay will be similar considering the difference in cost of living.  Just like the cities, pay will be more but bottom line is no extra money in the pocket because bills are more.
