I wonder why so many of you stay here if it's soooo bad?

Many do not really have a choice pete.  Some have a house that they could not sell for the debt leveraged against it, others have families to think about as well.  Uprooting children from schools and friends they have known all their lives can be somewhat traumatic.  Besides, the area has plenty of positives to offer, and some are only trying to take care of the negatives.

Did Ford go to Wisconsin because of Paul Sparks and Pam Bishop? I don't think so.

Can you prove that the communication with these two had absolutely nothing to do with Fords decision?

Pete, you ask if Ford went to Wisconsin because of Sparks or Bishop. Who knows? My point is that the city council tells us our package that we offer is as good if not better than what other towns offer. So if its not the package, might it be the people selling the package? You have never paid more for something just because the salesman bent over backwards for you?
I have seen documents that state that at the time Ford chose Wisconsin over us, that with our package we offered, it would have been cheaper for them to move to Albert Lea. I agree that there are other factors to consider also. I guess I just feel that if we have tried everything else, the only thing left to do is to change our sales team. Wouldnt you agree that if the local car dealership had a guy, or gal, that hadnt made a sell in years, that they would try a different salesman? I just think that this is the last thing we havent tried. No other business in this country give its leaders this long to do a job with little or no success as government does. Are the company board of directors looking out for the stock holders more than our government is looking out for us? If they arent getting the job done, get rid of them, period. And as far as letting me do it, I have no doubt in my mind that for the most part Pam Bishop is more qualified to do her job than I would be at this moment. But I also have no doubt in my mind that if you gave us both the same product to sell, at the same price, she wouldnt stand a chance, I would out sell her everytime. When it comes down to it thats what she is, a salesman, and not a very good one.
And Pete, you ask why we stay here if its so bad. If you notice, most of the posts are critical of the government, or people that work for the government. That can be changed, but coming in here and talking about all the good things, and there are many, does nothing to change the bad. I just dont think this type of forum is the place where you are going to see the type of comments you want to see. People are frustrated, and sick of the way things are going in this town, they come in here to vent that frustration. Doesnt mean we think it is a bad place to live, or that nothing good ever gets done. But the good things dont need fixin, the bad do, why not bring em out in the open and talk about it, instead of acting like it doesnt exist? I cant stand our United States government and how they do things, doesnt mean I dont love America. Same thing with Albert Lea, I cant stand the governemt because of what it does to the people and this town, both of witch I love. See the difference?

I heard from a usually reliable source that Caterpillar looked at AL within the last month for a regional distribution center for farm equipment (combines) and parts--and rejected it.  I wouldn't normally give credibility to this kind of rumor, but the source has been reliable in the past, AND has connections to Caterpillar.

Anybody else heard anything?

Havent heard that, but in my opinion companies like that are the ones we should do everything in our power to attract. If we could get that one big company, the smaller ones would follow. We wouldnt have to do a thing for them, they would be asking us if they can come to town.

ALTiger - I believe Fleet Farm owns the land at Olson Rd. and Hammer Rd., to the west of Sorenson Bros.  They've owned that land for years.  Perhaps they are just holding it for future development, and aren't actively pursuing a deal with the city.
I don't know if it is why they haven't built, but one problem with the property is no freeway visibility or easy access.

Speaking of Hammer Road -- I recently drove there one night, and I noticed all of the street lights.  I know the city put in sewer and water along there, but if Sparks is considering a street light utility - why in the hell don't they shut those lights off.  They aren't lighting intersections or anything else.  Seems like a total waste of electricity  ??? .

1Adam12, you're close.  They own land along Sorensen Rd. across from about Interstate Trucks.  The city has already put sewer and water up to that point.  Why they haven't done anything is puzzling, perhaps they put it on hold when Home Depot announced they were coming in to see how they do.  That land is still in farm land (alfalfa), so they are getting an income off of it now.
