Sadly we have been at or near the top for a long time.
And will only be worse with the new federal tax rates and Minnesota’s failure to pass changes to our tax laws to match.
Trying to find something that also figures in property taxes and vehicle taxes.
What would be an interesting comparison is a study that takes a families info and then plops them into each state and compairs it all. Income, property, sales, gas, vehicle, etc.

gas tax - what is the rationale behind it? if it is going to be used on the repair & or replacement of roads, bridges etc. then it would seem logical that the weight of the vehicle & the amount of mileage during the year would be applicable & not the price of the vehicle. is diesel fuel taxed the same as gas? just adding x number of cents to a gas tax does not make any sense as that does not take into account what is contributing to the wear & tear of the infrastructure. by adding just mileage would definitely hurt the rural areas & add to their further demise. how about taking the maintenance or new roads out of the general fund or the surplus taxes so that everyone pays without hitting the poor? density of population is another factor to consider. it seems logical to assume that the repair or replacement of roads in the higher metropolitan areas would be more frequent thus more expensive than the rural areas. perhaps a sliding scale tax would be appropriate? in closing i would appreciate constructive comments & not offhand remarks as these are not only offensive but non productive!

In post 6 there is a link to the taxes. Looks like diesel is taxed the same as gas.
Agree on vehicle size/weight as that is a contributing factor to road and bridge deterioration.
If people in the rural areas are driving more miles they should have to pay more for their maintenance.
And yes, more densely populated areas typically need more frequent road repairs as can be seen anytime you drive through the twin cities.

Yes, diesel is taxed the same as gas, thing is, big truck get far less mpg than cars, we also pay HVUT (heavy vehicle use tax). But go right ahead, raise fuel tax. The first thing all carriers will do, big and small is raise rates, which will be passed down the line till it ends up costing Joe citizen more.
Taxes are a bitch, aren’t they?

thanks for clarifying the huvt tax on semi's, i was not aware of that! i think that we are all in agreement that something has to be done to repair the roads & bridges, but what form this takes is anyone's guess. i guess it all boils down to your damned if you do & damned if you don't. the big rigs haul most of the freight & like you said it will get passed on! there will be no winners on this deal & hopefully the rural areas will not be left out.

^^how do the republicans plan to repair roads and bridges? oh yeah, let the bridges fall down and the roads revert to gravel!
I remember trucks pulling 32' 36' trailers 42', was a long one. now days 48' 53' are the standards, hammering the piss out of our roads—lay the tax on those who do the damage, truckers...

^^ no, about the same weights are hauled, 53’s just allow for more volume, 48’s are rarely used anymore. So you don’t lie the big bad trucks beating up your roads? Here’s a little secret for you, everything you use comes to you on a truck, food, clothes, anything plastic, the fuel for you Yugo, everything. Raise the fuel tax and it will just get passed down. Maybe quit putting money down the shithole for mass transit will fix the roads.
