I've eaten E&B before but tried the AL store tonight.  Same stuff different town.  I like it when I'm in a hurry.  I am getting board with Subway.  I do prefer Quiznos over the other sandwhich shops.

Not surprised by the negative comments.  The town couldn't keep a starbucks, but McD's, Taco Bell, and other crappy fast food joints thrive.

Albert Lea a Blue Zone, my ass.

Starbucks closed hundreds if not thousands of their locations, including their Mankato location - a college town where they should have been thriving.

I haven't tried E&G yet, but I have heard that you have to order the sandwiches EXACTLY as listed on the menu because they are made and wrapped elsewhere. There are some ingredients I don't care for (such as mayo) which are common on most subs.

Then again, I guess I'm not THAT big on subs to begin with. I might check them out sometime but I'm in no hurry. I've heard their soup is really good.

I have eaten at the E&G here in Mankato a bunch of times after concerts at the Verizon Center.  All the sandwiches were made right in front of us, never pre-made or anything like that.  They are a little pricier than say Subway but still worth it for what you get IMO.  They are building another E&G in Upper North only a couple blocks from the house here, that'll be a nice addition up here for us.

I was surprised to hear that the sandwiches (some of them anyway) were premade. That seemed unusual for a sub place, but I heard that from someone who has been there a few times.

I wonder if ours is an Erbert and Gerbert express, if there is such a thing.

On that note, does anyone remember the Subway knockoff that was in the Northbridge Mall food court in the early 90s? I think it was called Freshway, and even their logo was a Subway knockoff. They didn't last long. Of course, they were competing against several real Subway restaurants.

You can get your sandwhich however you want. They are made right there. My wife has them add and remove stuff all the time. Me, I'm not so fussy.  :D

I tried Erbert and Gerberts a couple weeks ago.  Wasn't bad, the bread seemed fresh and soft enough.  A little thin on the meat and veges though.  Around here I still think Quiznos is by far the best for subs, but Subway is pretty good too so I'd give Subway second place.

I wouldn't mind trying E&G again sometime.  As with any place it can take a while to find a favorite sub or soup.

Here it is. When the franchise was here, it didn't say "Food Systems" on the logo, and the "Freshway" part was green and blue, almost exactly like Subway was then.

I think they were where the travel agent (don't recall their "new" name) is now in the Northbridge Mall. I lived in Le Center for a few years, and they had one there too.

I'm surprised they're still around. Apparently you can still open up a sandwich franchise. These guys are the McDowell's of sub sandwiches.
