Damn shame when the IQ of the student is higher than the cop.

Well said, Geo.  But what are you going to do?  You gotta have cops and nobody with any sense wants to be one.

Once parents and students stop crying the boo hoos if they get smacked by a teacher in school for being a real problem, then and only then will the police be able to leave the schools.

Liberal bed wetters have taken all the threat out of todays teachers.  When all a teacher can do is send you to the office; why not act up big time?  The dicipline in schools is a joke.

When I was a student in primary and secondary school the teachers had the balls and the support to be truely intimidating.  The cool thing about that, once a teacher establishes himself or herself as a hard azz, they could be really great instructors and one could build a truely mutually respectable student/teacher relationship.  But, I suppose relaying on individuals is too scary for the liberal enablers.

No sir. That's simply your response to intimidation and dominance in your formative years.  You've  simply extrapolated that early experience to everyone, even through time and space and in your mind think it must somehow be revelvant today in 2004. Truly bazaar.

Your ego is the ticket. It's what I would use to gain advantage over you in business. I'm the local Don Trump and you're fired...

Truth - So you are saying we should beat our children?

Also, as far as teachers hitting kids, that doesn't work so well in high school where many are more than big enough to hit back.  I wanted to teach once, but only at college level where students want to learn.

Frustrated - yeah, I can definitely empathize there.  As a small-framed 5'1" teacher, I do not have the physical embodiment to even try to pass on the hint of a threat to my kids.  They'd laugh me out of the classroom!

Truth, what I find to be much more effective with my high schoolers is simply to tell them (that's right, this works for a group of 22 high-energy high schoolers) that I'm disappointed in their behavior, either as a whole group, or if it's one kid, I'll pull them aside and tell them that.  And it works.  I've had a couple of incidents this year where I've had to be a baddie and I've been really curt with a few of my students of whom I think the world, young men and young women alike ... and all it took was a change from my usual somewhat breezy and fun-loving demeanor to really get to them.  I felt horrible because I made someone cry without ever raising my voice or touching them.  But then apparently word got around fast, and the entire class (one exception, but he's a terminal exception) has been great ever since.

No, no, no. You're a teacher? He's not talking about physical threats or intimidation. He's talking about psychological intimidation and domination. You know, yelling and stuff.

How many recruits hit a drill instructor????????????

Even the little phillipeno DI that stood 5'2" or the female DI's?

Once you establish control you rarely need to impose your position.

You guys are the problem not the answer.

Okay, I had originally questioned towards whom Truth's last post was directed in this post.  I kind of figure now that it was directed towards me.

All I can say is that your disciplinary actions depend on a) your class and b) your school.  My school administrators would be aghast and definitely not ask me to return to the building to teach - and wouldn't have given me the positive recommendations that I have in my files - if I had used disciplinary measures akin to those of a drill instructor.  That's it.  End of story.  My kids would have totally rebelled if I had started out getting in people's faces, yelling, etc.  It's not worth my time and effort to be a hardass.  Plus, it goes against the culture and environment upon which my building prides itself.  As I've said before in forums, our students run the gamut - poverty-stricken to filthy-rich developers' kids... something like 45 languages spoken among members of our student body... etc.
We have kids who don't ever hear anything positive at home, and we have kids who get nothing but praise from their parents.  I don't like yelling at kids because I don't know if that's all they ever hear at home.  I'd rather take time, send the kid to cool down somewhere, and then take two or three minutes to talk to him/her and see what's going on in that kid's life.  If you wouldn't want your kid treated like that, then send them across town to the rich 'n' spoiled high school.  That's my take on it.

I know my kids appreciate that I treat them with maturity and respect, and we have a great relationship.  At this point, I feel like the 22 kids in my class are more like younger siblings, not distant students.  Even my goof-offs have turned out to be lovable.  I work with them... I tutor them... I spend extra time going over assignments with them... and they each have different reasons for which they just don't get good grades.  But they're human and don't deserve to be barked at if they can't think of the answer after working the overnight shift at IHOP.  (I'll get on that student's case, but I do it privately when I won't make her feel like crap in front of the entire class.  That'd just be cruel.)  My struggling junior really made a flattering gesture when she asked to interview me for a biography assignment I had given... and even though she's really struggling, she's going to suck it up and go into AP French next year!  And I couldn't be more proud of her choice.  All I can say is that my approach has worked for my class.  In another class, it'd be a different situation and I'd have to use different measures.  I prefer to assume that my kids are old enough to be trusted until proven otherwise.
