Alci would like you to believe that it's some grand master plan drummed up by Obama to break Russia.

I don't know if anyone thinks that this is a master plan of Obama's.  But it certainly throws out the GOP talking points and scare tactics when it comes to oil.  For example, we don't need to sacrifice the environment (ANWR or the Ogallala Aquifer) in order to get cheaper gas or become a net exporter of oil.
Reuters:  U.S. crude exports highest since '57

As for "total independance", I'm sure you realize that because of global trade there's no such thing.  If the oil gets cheaper the companies will just send it elsewhere.  We're a net exporter for the first time in over 50 years but we didn't see the price decline until the global price declined.
EIA:  Oil Exports Chart by Year

Like I said, Obama doesn't deserve the credit, but it proves that the nation can do just as well (better actually) on the subject of energy independence and the economy with Democrats holding the Oval Office and either or both houses of Congress.  Thanks to new technology we've beat Repubs on both subjects and they were kicking and screaming the whole way saying it would never happen without drilling in ANWR and building the XL phase of the pipeline.

I guess all those "pipe-dreams" (pun intended) weren't needed.

The lower the prices the less appealing it is for oil companies to want to make infrastructure investments in this country that can lead to total independence.

Maybe today, but they've been drilling those wells and putting money in that infrastructure for a few years now, the wells and the oil under the Bakken aren't going to run away because of a temporary drop in crude.  If anything it will give the Dakotas time to catch up on public infrastructure and housing needs.

Oil prices aren't going to stay low forever, it would be nice to have the infrastructure in place for when the prices do rise again.

I don't think we're going to see $5 gas but enjoy what we have for now.
