Sorry, Putin. Russia’s economy is doomed

Republicans were recently worshiping Vladimir Putin as the almighty leader of the world..

Who are the repubs that were praising him?

Russia's current economic woes stem from actions on OPEC's part. Enjoy that B-roll of distressed-looking Russian folk and low U.S. gas prices. When the other shoe drops, it will be footage of idled rigs, dried-up North Dakota shale oil boom towns, and distressed-looking laid-off workers.

Yes but Americans will have billions of US dollars to spend on Christmas instead of gasoline.. Yee Haw!

GDP should get a healthy bump..

You under-estimate the power of the US President..

He just weakened the radical right-wing ideology of Iran and Russia with nothing more than an agreement with Saudi Arabia to sell cheap oil only to the US..

Bam!!

Assad gave up all chemical weapons so he wouldn't end up like Gaddafi..

I agree.  The local shill's (aka alcitizens) man crush on Obama has warped his perception of events.

On top of OPEC's actions or rather inaction, it was bi-partisan legislation written by a Republican dominated congress and then signed by Obama, in conjunction with sanctions from the EU that has had some affect, imo.

Venezuela's economy is also in trouble.  Why?  Not because of Obama but because of the oil market.

Earlier this week, the ruble suffered catastrophic losses as traders continued to fret over the combined impact of low oil prices and Western sanctions over Russia's involvement in Ukraine's crisis.

Here's How President Obama Is Using the 'Oil Weapon'—Against Iran, Russia, and ISIS

The Obama administration has appropriated it as a major tool of foreign policy, a new way to go to war with nations it considers hostile without relying on planes, missiles, and troops.

You got that right.  OPEC is trying to protect there market share from U.S. competition.  The lower the prices the less appealing it is for oil companies to want to make infrastructure investments in this country that can lead to total independence.

Alci would like you to believe that it's some grand master plan drummed up by Obama to break Russia.

A recent estimate by the International Monetary Fund, Deutsche Bank and Fitch Rankings reported Russia needs the global oil price at $98 a barrel to cover its budgetary expenditures. Venezuela's "break even" price is about $117.50 a barrel and Iran's is even higher -- $130.70.

In the first two weeks of the year, when Russia was on holiday, the rouble fell by 17.5% against the dollar. Inflation is up into double figures. The price of oil, Russia’s main export, has slid below $50 a barrel, prompting economists to revise their forecasts down. GDP is now expected to contract by between 3% and 5% this year. Russia’s credit rating is moving inexorably towards junk.

Though it is true that our dollar is stronger, it's mainly because other nations currency is weakening. Leave it to ABC's spin to make it look better than it actually is.
On the darker side of this situation US manufacturing will be slowed because of fewer exports and our trade deficit will grow again because import goods will be cheaper.
On the bright side of this I'll profit because the bulk of what my trucks haul is import.

I don't know if anyone thinks that this is a master plan of Obama's.  But it certainly throws out the GOP talking points and scare tactics when it comes to oil.  For example, we don't need to sacrifice the environment (ANWR or the Ogallala Aquifer) in order to get cheaper gas or become a net exporter of oil.
< Reuters:  U.S. crude exports highest since '57 >

As for "total independance", I'm sure you realize that because of global trade there's no such thing.  If the oil gets cheaper the companies will just send it elsewhere.  We're a net exporter for the first time in over 50 years but we didn't see the price decline until the global price declined.
< EIA:  Oil Exports Chart by Year >

Like I said, Obama doesn't deserve the credit, but it proves that the nation can do just as well (better actually) on the subject of energy independence and the economy with Democrats holding the Oval Office and either or both houses of Congress.  Thanks to new technology we've beat Repubs on both subjects and they were kicking and screaming the whole way saying it would never happen without drilling in ANWR and building the XL phase of the pipeline.

I guess all those "pipe-dreams" (pun intended) weren't needed.

Maybe today, but they've been drilling those wells and putting money in that infrastructure for a few years now, the wells and the oil under the Bakken aren't going to run away because of a temporary drop in crude.  If anything it will give the Dakotas time to catch up on public infrastructure and housing needs.

Oil prices aren't going to stay low forever, it would be nice to have the infrastructure in place for when the prices do rise again.
