Yep, that's what I got. No e-mail attachments, nothing and only took about 10 minutes to infect a fresh system. I knew this day would come. Now, it's regular updates from microsoft I guess.

This Virus seems to be infecting only non updated Win XP if you have a pirated copy you will not be able to run the updates which is required to run the sasser fix. I have had to install xp upgrade over xp non licensed copies. Customers Machines not my own.

Firewall dont help, I had XPs firewall running, plus Zone Alarm. On top of that, Norton Corparate Edition Anti Virus. Took it in to get it fixed, wound up wipeing everything and starting from scratch. Got the puter home, and in the time I was online updating windows, I got it again. This time I let puter program take care of it. I think anyone who had costs to repair this virus should be able to submit a bill, and this little piece of $hit slug that started should have to spend the rest of his life paying for it. That is after we hang him by his balls for a day in Time Square, with a sign on him, that tells all the other low lifes out there that this is what will happen to them if they do the same. The anti virus companies need to stop hireing these scums that do this. Anymore, breaking into a system, or making the baddest virus around is as good as a job interview. Part of this persons sentence should be that he never again be allowed to be on the internet or within 10 feet of any computer.

You do not have to use the auto update feature in windows to patch your system for this worm. Most of the anti-virus sites have a link to where you can download the patch for both releases of XP. Then just burn the patch to a CD and you don't have to pull your hair out trying to download it before your machine gets infected again.

If you are going to run MS Windows (any version) then you really need to keep it up to date! Both 2000 and XP have a feature that allows the OS to connect to MS when online, download and install the updates automatically. Only problem is not too many people use it.
Most viruses now days are written by kiddies who look at the latest fixes from Microsoft, see what exploits were patched and write a program to take advantage of the exploits on un-patched systems. Not too hard to figure out. The patch for this worm was on the MS update for over a week before it hit- just goes to show too many people still can not learn to keep their systems up to date.
Also, anyone using broadband to connect to the internet, I suggest using a hardware based firewall- something like a Linksys router- cheap and easy! That program they call a firewall in XP is a joke!
So, with keeping Microsoft operating systems up to date, running a decent antivirus package, and cleaning your system with a spy-ware remover periodically you can keep yourself from having problems like this. Sorry George, if this advice keeps a few people from seeking your services.
