Yesterday at a news conference, Gov. Pawlenty stated he would push for the death penalty in Minnesota.
Quote | Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty called members of the media to his office today to talk about the latest developments in the Dru Sjodin abduction case.
But he also talked about changes to Minnesota law he plans to push during the next legislative session, including a call for the death penalty. Pawlenty supported death penalty bills when he was in the legislature, however as governor this is the first time he's talked about seeking a change in the law. The governor says the case of student Dru Sjodin was the tipping point in him calling for the change.
Pawlenty said he’d ask the legislature to allow juries to impose the death penalty in cases where police and children are killed and in other heinous crimes like sexual assaults coupled with murders or attempts to murder.
Pawlenty acknowledged that it would be an uphill battle to get the death penalty approved. Minnesota is one of 12 states without the death penalty. It abolished capital punishment in 1911.

This might sound odd, coming from a self-proffessed conservative, but I couldn't support the death penalty. I used to be for it, but the more I see of politics, even at the local level, I no longer have confidence in the judicial system.
Most of us involved in this forum have seen the "good ol' boys club" of politics--if you are "connected", the rules are different than those for someone just passing through the area.
Most of us are aware of the media circus of the O.J. Simpson trial, and feel that he was wrongly aquitted by skillful lawyers at a cost of millions of dollars. That knife cuts both ways (pun intended!) --if a poor person were to be accused, he would be helpless against the full weight of the government legal system.
In civil actions, most attorneys will tell you that despite the most compelling evidence you have, there is a 5-10% chance that you will lose, due to a legal quirk, judges prejudice, or jury selection. Russian Roulette has a 1 in 6 chance of coming up on the "wrong" chamber--even though the chances of a wrong verdict are 2-3 times better than Russian Roulette, I don't think it would be wise to play that game. That is too big a risk for something as final as the death penalty. I have lost confidence in the judicial system.

Jim, I have to ask, would you feel differently if it were your child, sibling, wife etc. that was brutally raped then murdered and dumped in a field?

Tiger--probably--but I would feel bad for the children siblings, wife, etc. of someone wrongly executed.
I have nothing against the death penalty--I just feel that in this day and age that there are too many errors in the judicial system, and not "equal access to justice" to apply it.
I won't wimp out on doing in the perps--I'm in favor of arming every RESPONSIBLE adult that will take the time to take training and certification for concealed carry permits. SHOOT THE PERPS WHEN THEY TRY TO DO THE CRIME IN THE FIRST PLACE. Not only do we not have victims in the FIRST place, but justice is sure, swift, and deadly, and the mere fact that someone MIGHT be carrying acts as a deterrent that protects ALL of us.

Here are some examples of TX Death row convicts at this time over 450 are awaiting to die.
Inmate Roach
On 06/08/98, in Amarillo, Texas, Roach fatally strangled a 29-year old white female after burglarizing her residence. Roach knocked on the victim's apartment door and when he did not receive an answer, he pried open a window and gained entry. Roach saw the victim sitting in the living room. Roach hid in the bathroom and when the victim walked down the hallway, he confronted her. The victim struggled with Roach. He placed a belt around her neck and strangled her. When the victim was dead, Roach sexually assaulted the body. Roach set fire to the residence prior to leaving.
Inmate Brewer
Brewer was convicted in the murder of a black male occurring on 06/07/98. The offense involved Brewer and two co-defendants torturing and killing a 49-year old handicapped black male during the nighttime hours, in rural Jasper County, Texas. The victim was observed in the back of a pickup truck occupied by Brewer and his co-defendants. This was the last occasion the victim was seen alive by persons other than Brewer and his co-defendants. Brewer and his co-defendants drove to an isolated spot on a logging road where they beat and tormented the victim, then tied him to a logging chain, which was hooked to the pickup truck. Brewer and his co-defendants then dragged the victim to his death, leaving his decapitated and dismembered body to be found the following day by citizens and law enforcement officials. It was argued in court that Brewer and his co-defendants engaged in this criminal act, in part, due to their racially separatist affiliation with the Confederate Knights of America and the Ku Klux Klan. Brewer and one co-defendant were documented members of the Confederate Knights of Americaand a large number of Ku Klux Klan and other racial separatist organization paraphernalia was discovered in a residence occupied by the three.
Inmate Ripkowski
On 01/22/97, in Salt Lake City, Utah, the subject strangled an adult white female, the mother of the 2-year old victim of the present offense. Ripkowski left her on the side of the road and then drove to Houston, Texas with her 2-year old daughter. The child was smothered by Ripkowski on Christmas day. Ripkowski put her body in a suitcase and left it on the side of the road in Houston, Texas. The suitcase remained there for approximately 1 week, at which time, Ripkowski took the suitcase and buried it in a shallow grave.
Inmate Drew
On 08/28/95, in Amarillo, Texas, the subject and co-defendants, Raydon Drew, Donald Drew, Jr. and Christie Castillo caused the death of an adult white male. The offense took place at the victim's residence in Amarillo, Texas. According to Amarillo Law Enforcement, the offense was a committed to earn co-defendant Raydon Drew a tear drop from the Crips. The Drew brothers were familiar with the victim. They entered the home under the pretense of visiting. Lookouts were parked in vehicles at each end of the street. The victim was stabbed numerous times with knives and an ice pick. The victim was also beaten with a pipe. The subject and codefendants removed a VCR, a camcorder, a stereo system, a cordless phone, a television, and jewelry from the residence
Inmate White On August 4, 1997, the subject kidnapped a 9-year-old white female in Ozona, Texas, during the nighttime hours. He then took her to a roadside park out of the city limits and attempted to have sexual intercourse with her. The victim resisted, but he taped her hands behind her back with black electrical tape and continued to sexually assault her. During this time, a vehicle pulled up behind him and he left the location. He then he took the victim to another location, hit her several times on the head with a tire tool, and left the scene. Authorities were given the location of the body by the subject. The victim was found with her hands tied behind her back, deceased.
Inmate Toney
On 11/28/85 in Lake Worth 2 males and 1 female died as a result of a briefcase bomb. Another male and female were injured by the explosion.
Inmate Murray
On 02/10/98, in Kaufman, Texas, during the nighttime hours, the subject beat, strangled and raped a 93-year old female. Law enforcement officers responded to a call concerning the victim at her residence. When the officers arrived, they found the residence to be in disarray and appeared to have been ransacked. They found the victim in the bedroom, nude from the waist down with wounds and bruising on and about her head area. The victim also had an Ace bandage tied around her neck and into her mouth, which was soaked with blood. It was stated that the victim's death was caused by strangulation and blunt force injuries. The subject confessed to entering the residence and ransacking it. The subject admitted that he physically and sexually assaulted the victim, and wrapped an Ace bandage around her face and mouth. The subject admitted he removed some change from a jar and a small knife.
Inmate Thompson
On 04/30/98 in Houston, Thompson got into an argument with a white male and white female in her apartment. The night before officers had been called to the same address and had escorted Thompson away from the residence. Thompson returned early the next morning and kicked the door in. Thompson shot the male, causing his death, and injuring the female severely enough to require life flight to the hospital. She died one week later, as a result of the shooting.
Inmate Russell
One reason never let a convicted felon get his affairs in order before he served his sentence.....
On 08/13/2001, in Houston, Texas, Russell fatally stabbed a 40 year old black female. Russell believed that the victim had set him up on a delivery of cocaine charge. Russell was sentenced to ten year on the cocaine charge, and committed this offense while on bond from the court to get his personal affairs in order before serving his sentence.
Do these animals deserve to Die Damn Right they do You shoot a rabbit dog. It should be Trial at 10, Sentenced at 11:00 and Hanging at noon.

i think they should let the families of the victims have a crack at the offenders, eye for an eye. get about 20 members of the family in a locked room with the perp.

Q. Does the death penalty deter violent crime? A. Probably not. Virtually every study of the death penalty has concluded that it does not deter crime. The October, 2001 FBI Unified Crime report shows that states that apply the death penalty have higher rates of homicide.
Q. Which is cheaper, life in prison or the death penalty? A. Life in prison without parole is far less expensive than the death penalty. Study after study has found that trying to get a death sentence costs up to ten times as much as trying to get life in prison.
