Why do they think that these bump outs are going to do anything for the downtown area?!?  Really the only benefit is that you have less walking from sidewalk to sidewalk when crossing the street and that is if you actually crossed at the corner!  Use your melons people and put this money somewhere useful, like to clean the lakes or update parks or really anything other than bump outs!!  I can see why this town is hurting wasteful spending among other things.  If they want families to stay here then they better start doing something different because I could care less about how the downtown looks there isn't enough shops to get anyone down there.

One of the benefits they listed in the Tribune was the reduced amount of time it would take to cross intersections.

It's a shame that there isn't a feature on the traffic lights to remedy this... like, say, AN ADJUSTABLE TIMED CROSSING SIGNAL.

But that would be the simple, logical solution and wouldn't help justify the money they already spent on the consultants they paid to tell them they had a good idea.

How many vehicle-pedestrian accidents on a crosswalk has there been in the last ten years at these intersections?

PUBIC MEETING tomorrow at city chambers 7:00 PM - Voice your opinions on the purposed BUMPOUTS.

I think they should install them. But not just uptown, I think they should put them in on EVERY intersection in town. If it makes cents uptown it makes cents everywhere.

Plus we can probably hire one or two more personnel to help get the snow out.

QUOTE
How will the medians and bumpouts affect snow removal?
These features, while great for safety, make snow removal more difficult. The snow will continue to be plowed from the center to the outside of the roadway where it will need to be loaded and removed. Removal will take extra time as operators need to maneuver around the bumpouts. My Webpage

I don't mind the bumpout idea in theory, but I think higher maintenance costs are a no-brainer to avoid.  Because of budget situations departments are getting cuts year after year, and although last winter was a breeze by Minnesota standards, we get a normal snowfall and those plow drivers will have a hard enough time keeping up with the snowfall.

This will add extra work for them and we'll either have to tell'em to take less time plowing other areas, or raise taxes (again) to make up the difference; past experience says the city will do both.  Skip the bumpouts, and focus on core services.

A note of pessimism, we're a dying town that can barely afford our police and fire departments, and I stopped going to the library because the sign seems to always say they're closed.  Yet we're continually hiring consultants to find other ways to spend money that we don't have.  Then we'll get a notice in a few months that we're going to close the library more often, lay off another cop or firemen again.
