:dunno: I guess there must me something in the air!  First charges against an Austin police officer and now charges filed on an Albert Lea officer.  Whats up with that?

Jesus Cantu is being charged with child abuse.  His own child.

Child Abuse Complaint Filed Against Albert Lea Police Officer

A police officer is in trouble with the law tonight.

A criminal complaint has been filed in freeborn county against Officer Jesus Cantu.

The complaint alleges Cantu abused his son.

Jesus Cantu has been a member of the Albert Lea Police Department for years and how he faces charges of malicious punishment of a child.

"As soon as we found out about the charges at the end of December, we placed the officer on paid administrative leave and since been reassigned," said Chief Dwaine Winkels

According to the criminal complaint Cantu allegedly assaulted his six-year old son during a custody visit.

The child says Cantu "spanked, slapped and punched him".

Cantu's ex-wife called authorities after she says she saw several marks on her son.

An investigating officer said he observed a deep red mark or bruise on the left side of the child's face and red markings on the child's right buttocks.

We tried to talk Cantu, but he declined to comment about the charges.

We also did a search to see if there was any other abuse-related criminal complaints filed against Cantu and found none.

Due to a conflict of interest the case is being heard in Waseca County.

And a prosecuting attorney from Olmsted County will handle the case and released this statement to ABC 6 news.

"We do not wish to comment regarding the merit of this case to the press, because we want to ensure we do not effect the opinion of the jury pool".

Don't worry, they'll be plenty of locals who will think I was spanked and hit and it taught me discipline. Then they'll think, what did he do wrong?

This was very common, typical and excepted when I grew up. Even elementary school principles would do it to other peoples children. It was normal.  Our fathers were treated very harshly as children of the 30's and 40's and 50's. It's funny, the little kids who it happened to are the ones most likely to do it as fully grown adults. I suspect Geo suffered much, much worse.

Hell, Bill Cosby used to joke about this sort of parenting on his very early LP's. Other people kept their noses out of your "family business." Pretty common stuff where and when I grew up. Pre-Redneck-era domestic violence, by today's nomenclature.

Not to defend the guy, but as much of a crack pot his ex is, well I could see her smacking the kid up and convincing the kid his dad did it.

State court sides with parents over spanking
Bloomington couple's choice of discipline wasn't child abuse, appeals judges say
BY SHANNON PRATHER

Article Last Updated: 07/25/2007 12:14:24 AM CDT

Hitting a 12-year-old boy with a wooden paddle 36 times "may not have been the best approach" to parental discipline but it's not physical abuse, the Minnesota Court of Appeals ruled Tuesday.

A Bloomington couple resorted to the paddle after their son kept sneaking out of the house. They consulted the Bible before they administered the corporal punishment.

During the 2005 incident, the boy grabbed a kitchen knife and threatened suicide. The father took away the knife and paddled the boy again.

Hennepin County District Judge Pamela Alexander had called the paddling "physical abuse" and determined the boy and his 11-year-old brother were in need of child protection. On Tuesday, the appeals court reversed the lower court ruling, finding the incident didn't amount to abuse. Parents enjoy a "wide degree of latitude regarding the discipline of their children," the three-judge panel concluded.

"Spanking a child for wielding a knife and making a suicide threat is probably not an appropriate parental response," Judge Christopher Dietzen wrote for the court. "But we do not conclude that the ... spankings constituted physical abuse."

The children spent nine months in foster care and were returned to their parents before the lower court ruling, according to the parents' lawyers. Court documents identify the parents by their initials.

"We fought this so other families don't have to go through the same thing," the father said, through his attorney.

Sumpdump and Tallenz are correct.  I can tell you first hand that the ex is as luney as they come.  Her whole family  -  - - a bunch of headcases.  I wouldn't put anything past her.  I do believe her sister claimed the same against her ex about their children.
