Are they paved roads, crossing a main (high speed) line?

Freeborn County Map
Here is a map. It shows the rail lines. Would have to drive roads and verify crossings. I bet if you stopped into engineer's office they could mark the map on unprotected crossings.

Good job, Rocket. (You say you came from a railroading family--the Rock Island wouldn't have anything to do with your "Rocket" name, would it?) The only main line I see is the N-S line from Ellendale to the Iowa border--the E-W line from Alden-Hayward, and the line to Hartland--I've never seen trains go very fast on them.
The next decent flying day, I'll take a visual on the line--anything else to look for on the RR route?

It is my understanding that grade crossings are the responsibility of the RailRoad Companies, not of the various highway departments who's roads they cross. Does anyone know if this is a correct understanding, and could they state how crossing lights, and guards sites get selected.

I believe the crossing lights are the responsibility/decision of the railroad, however the county could elect to put rumple strips on the blacktop.

It was unfortunate that anyone was killed. Not necessarily the fault of the crossing in all instances. Alcohol has had something to with some of the train accidents around here. All the stop arms and signals in the world won't prevent accidents that are alcohol related. Sad anyone has to lose their life and the ache their families have to go through.

I took on the county and the railroad years ago. Fact remains that in order for anything to be done as far as lights, arms, etc. there needs to be at least one fatality at that particular crossing. The one that I'd like to bring your attention to is the city arena road. Send your kids there for Hockey? Dance? go to the Sports and Home show? look at the tree line and your visability.......its a death trap out there and has been so for many years.
