I use Twitter to follow some reporters and pundits, I just don't care who owns it. People seem to be upset thinking he will allow hate speech, but twitter doesn't make money from tweets, they depend on advertisers.

All these people saying Twitter has suppressed their “freedom of speech” really need a remedial constitution class.

Cleaning all the bots off of Twitter would be nice , how Elon does do that

There is a need to keep hate speech and disinformation clamped down. And doing so on a platform like Twitter is not an infringement of anyones right to free speech

All those who are out there speeding hate and disinformation are doing nothing but harming us all.  And sadly many of them doing so are being paid to do so

How do you define "hate speech"?  It's completely subjective, same with "disinformation"
Limiting the discourse of speech, inhibits the exchange of ideas, beliefs and missed facts.
Both sets of those qualifiers are terrible guiding principles to begin with, due to their subjective nature.

hate speech - abusive or threatening speech or writing that expresses prejudice against a particular group, especially on the basis of race, religion, or sexual orientation.

disinformation - false information which is intended to mislead, especially propaganda issued by a government organization to a rival power or the media.

I'm all for the exchange of ideas and beliefs and information.  but there is no need to do so in mean, hateful ways.  When it is done in such a manner than there really is not exchange of ideas.

Disinformation has been the dividing force within this country for years and it has only grown more powerful with social media.

and, twitter, facebook, tic-toc etc.  all have a right of their own to limit what is posted on their sites and thus define hate speech and disinformation as they feel fit.  doing so does not infringe on anyone's right to free speech as the constitution and bill of rights intends it.

again it really comes down to people being civil with one another and respecting one another.  By doing so, people are then more open to listen to others view points and make compromise.  When one tries to make their point by name calling and insults, no one is going to listen to them nor change their opinion on whatever the topic may be.

sadly, far too many don't care to actually come to compromises or even truly engage with others to learn their point of view and why they have it.  No, now its just about "owning" the other side.  and proving our toughness by use of insults and name calling.

Again, the definition you gave for "hate speech" is subjective.  A person could be completely on the up and up in a reply that goes against a set narrative and be called out for hate speech.  The issue here is, it's used as a cudgel to shut down speech that offends or goes against the other party's beliefs.

Same with disinformation.  Who gets to decide what set of facts/data is allowed and what isn't?  The media?  Govt?
I've seen it time and time again and it's a marxist tool to shut down information that counters a set narrative of what is currently "factual"  I mean look at this whole covid fiasco, virologist, scientists, drs, etc, come out with data that countered the set govt and media's narrative and was labeled misinformation/disinformation.

Perhaps it's just me, but I don't anybody deciding for me what is or is not misinformation/disinformation, I have a brain and can research it just fine.

I understand that freedom of speech does not extend to privately owned entities such as twatter, fascistbook, etc.
I also think alot of it is lost due to the fact it is a text based interaction between people/groups and a lot of nuance is lost due to it being virtual instead of face to face and take what is being read as hostile at times.

most everything can be considered subjective.

I see nothing in any definition of hate speech that in anyway becomes political so one party is offended vs another doesn't carry water with me.  pretty sure there are people in both parties when called a certain word would agree it is hate speech.

the out right lying, even when presented with facts that prove otherwise, and then just continuing to state the falsehoods and presenting them as fact is dangerous and unethical.  sadly ethics seem to no longer matter

there is definitely a problem of things being misconstrued in the written language vs the spoken word.  inflection and sarcasm are missed.  shoot, even in person many don't pick up on sarcasm.

again, if people were to be more civil, listen (read), ask questions and try to learn from others with a different view point more things would get done for the greater good of all.

At one point the catholic church painted, Galileo, Christopher Columbus, Leonardo da Vinci, et al, as heretics and spreaders of misinformation/disinformation as the church was damned sure of it's version of the truth.
Freedom of speech is meant to be dangerous and unethical at times, this is how we as a people work through things and grow, shutting it down serves no purpose.
