There will soon be a push to ban smoking in all of Freeborn County.  Its already in the works .

Do it and they will come mentality.

If we clean the lakes they will come!!
If we just think positive they will come !!
If we build a new school they will come!!
If we build a new courthouse the will come!!
If we make the county smoke free they will come.!!

Those in power say."And if we don't do these things and they don't come It's your fault not ours."

businesses in the mall are gonna need a hell of a lot more help to stay in business then begging non smokers to come spend their money, you're getting pretty desperate geo.
I agree with minnow, go outside and pollute your lungs, don't do it inside.  and if you're worried about losing smoking customers geo don't be, they will probably be dead soon.   :p

Smoking-ban debate gathering steam
DULUTH:Two city councilors want to revisit the ban that prohibits smoking in restaurants through a pair of conflicting ordinances.
NEWS TRIBUNE

Says he may draft a new
ordinance that would ban smoking in all public places.

Duluth's smoking ban will be back for more debate.

City Councilor Russ Stewart said he will introduce an amendment to the ordinance that would allow restaurants to serve food in separate bar areas, if the area is in a different room and separately ventilated.

The news was greeted with a lack of enthusiasm by councilors.

"I would certainly rather not deal with this," said Councilor Donny Ness.

Duluth's ordinance bans smoking in all restaurants and any bar serving more than snacks or frozen appetizers. The ban includes pool halls and bowling alleys.

Voters approved the ordinance in November 2001, but it has been the source of debate and modification since then. Duluth police recently ticketed five Duluth bars for violating the ordinance.

Other enforcement has been controversial. Councilor Neill Atkins said he knew of one bar that was "reprimanded" by the city because an employee ate a sandwich on a break.

The issue has proved frustrating to many councilors.

Councilor Greg Gilbert said he is considering introducing an ordinance that would ban smoking in all public places -- including parks. The city currently asks people not to smoke in park and posts signs without the force of law.

I for one am glad.  Having smoking and nonsmoking sections in food courts or restaurants is about as effective as having chlorinated and nonchlorinated areas in a pool.  We went to Mexico Lindo for dinner last night and asked to be seated in the nonsmoking section.  They put us in a booth right by the stairs going up to the bar, which is the smoking section.  Gee, thanks, I can't smell the burning tar at all!

I only made my comment to non smoking women cause the mall offer very little to men and in a previous thread on this topic many of you stated it would improve business to make it non smoking. Now you have an opportunity to prove your claim.

I talked to a lobbyist for some type of restaurant, bar & bowling alley union up in St. Paul one time.  He was their trying to stop bills that they where considering about smoking bans.  Although it might bring in more non-smokers, overall it hurts the business due to losing out to smokers, along with the people that go with them.  I remember the China Restaurant used to always be packed, then they changed to non-smoking, and even on a Friday or Saturday night its dead in their.  If its a ban throughout town, then often smokers and their guests will go somewhere outside the city limits, or even another town (I know, smokers are stubborn).  That's the way he explained it to me (I'm a smoker though, so I wasn't hard to convince), and thats the way it usually turns out in the cities they've tried it in.

I'm not trying to downplay what its like for non-smokers.  Even if I'm in a smoking section somewhere I'll usually just wait if theirs non-smokers around (unless their my friends, by then their used to it).
