Well da mayor is just a dumb $%#&, a puppet for the PTB's.

The best use for the old Farmdead land would be to put a casino there, its is prolly the only way that AL is goin to make any money.  The amount of money AL could use generated from a Casino, would not only revitialize the town, but could pay for the lake clean up, and possibly lower property taxes.

Taxing people more and more is only going to drive their dollars out of town, and AL will die much more quickly.

Apparently the PTB's have forgotten basic economics, the ol supply and demand, but they just believe in the demand part of it, and demand you pony up.  So they can continue their leisure life-style at your expense.

Let's get our act together and have a State run casino on the old Farmland site.  We have a situation where it does bring in folks from distances.  We build it so it has a nice hotel, dining, and amusement area but not quite big enough so that our surrounding motels and restaurants get their share of the pie as well.

Good luck, remember, the knuckleheads in St. Paul signed an agreement with the Native American's to allow them full monopoly of lands in MN for casino purposes, the state is not allowed to compete against them per that agreement.

Chalk another one up for the slapnuts in St. Paul!

This whole ½ percent sales tax increase is going to backfire.  Albert Lea is not a shopping draw for a 50 mile radius, I would say at best only 50 square miles starting from the middle of town!  Many people I know already do most of their shopping out of town so I guess it would not put anyone too far out for them to simply do it all out of town.  I will ask this simple question, what does Albert Lea have (retail wise) that would not be found less than 45 min in ANY direction from town?

It’s really simple here, the less government takes in taxes off the top the more they can make by letting it circulate through several times and collect sales taxes and the likes.  In Freeborn County, we have taxes going up exponentially to the rates of inflation, taking that much more money out of the economy before it even has a chance to go around once.  Now the self-proclaimed saviors of this town think they can tax our way out of a situation brought about partly because of taxes?  This town and county are on the brink of economic collapse, and the mass exodus has begun.  More taxes on less people is going to be the final straw.

Oh, one more thing, a casino will never happen in Albert Lea so you can all stop dreaming.

The need for the 1/2% sales tax is to try and get some other guys to help pay for the benefit of fixing up down town Albert Lea, and cleaning up the lakes.  I wonder if people up to fifty miles away are that stupid.  I guess if you can find parents that are willing to send their kids to sleep over at Micheal Jackson's house, there is hope that this will fly.  Not!

Somewhere is this topic someone asked if anyone had been contacted by the consulting firm. I was. You are right that the questions were pointing in a certain direction. I was asked if I would rather have 1/2% increase in sales tax or increase in property tax. I said neither but that wasn't one of the choices. I strongly disagreed on both. I am big believer in user fees and let the people that use the lake pay for the lake. Boat docks on the lake should have substanial yearly fees, boats using the landings should pay user fees, there should be extra taxes on all fertilizer and chemicals used in the water shed, all land draining into the watershed (including mine) should be assessed damages and benefits similar to other watersheds. Those landowners that choose to do erosion control practices should be rewarded with cost shares for their efforts. Say no to more sales tax and property tax. If I choose to play golf I don't expect my neighbors to pay the green fees.

That was me.  I'm glad some one on this forum was asked so the rest of us can see just how underhanded our local government really is.

Loaded questionaires from our local government, go figure.  Somehow, I think that most people on this forum believed this was the case, now you prove it.

I agree with you on user fees, but the whole county is going to have to pay for the lake cleanup.  People that live on the lake shoud have to pay a higher fee, and fertilizer is one of the biggest problems with the lake.

This is one of the earlier plans to be done by the Shell Rock River Watershed District.

Farmers already are "rewarded" for soil conservation on their land through subsidies and this too, is going to be addressed by the district.
