I also agree with extreme one's point. Now all I have to do is put a sign on my door that says "consulting firm", charge them ten or twenty thousand and print off extreme & Jim's post.
Just kidding though, I realize kid's right about why they hire them...

Quote | What we need here is not an Indian Reservation, but the equivalent of one--legal gambling, tax-free cigarettes and other goods. | Do you suppose we could establish an Indian reservation without any Indians? It would be a way to beat back the proposed Northwood casino, and would offer "tax advantaged" shopping.

It's called Riverboat Gambling. In other states it is a legal way to have organized gambling without an Indian Reservation. Don't know if it would fly in Minnesota, but if it would, it seems to me that we have a wide spot on the Shell Rock River just across from the old Packing House. Close to bike trails and other attractions. Could be quite a deal.

Let me get this straight, the city hired a consulting firm to conduct a survey on whether city residents would opt for a 1/2% city tax. They pay the firm $21,500 to 376 people and ask them if they would rather have a 1/2% sales tax increase instead of getting an increase in property tax. Some choice. Why didn't they let someone from town just call a few people? Does anyone realize that's $57.18 per respondant, answering what sounds like a loaded question. Where's the sense in that?
Oh, that's right, it makes about as much sense as hiring a firm to do a feasibility study on a library we can't afford. I wonder if that firm will ask 376 people exiting the library if they think we need a bigger one so the library can have more video movies available?
Does anyone on this forum know someone who did get a call from these people?

If Eaton had some guts there would have been $21,500 we wouldn't have had to raise with a new tax!

Why raise any of it. I agree that the first money that should have been saved was the money for the survey. The whole save the lakes, save down town is going to end up being a bottomless money pit that will benefit few in the area.

Is it any wonder that someone that stated that putting flower baskets downtown would draw people to AL (see one of the first radio debates that was broadcasted prior to the last election) would also spout off like she is? Just the fact that the Trows supported her should have raised hundred's of red flags with people. Jean is nothing more than a cheerleader being lead from behind, i.e. pushed in the general direction that the local government wants her to go. She is nothing more than a glorified socko. I can say that I don't really spend a whole lot of money in AL right now besides groceries, if this new tax passes I will even stop buying my food in this town. I would much rather load up a cooler and shop for food in Austin versus being taxed more than I already am in AL. Hell, I might just stop all my money from going into AL aside from my utilities. Might not be much, but if other people follow my lead then there won't be a pot for AL governement to pee in after a year or two. What a bunch of friggin morons that run this town, and I thought the county board was our worst problem. Guess I was wrong.

My friend Buzz Kaplan had a saying about consultants--"A consultant is a guy that borrows your watch so he can tell you what time it is, then charge you for the service!"

A passion for projects drives Eaton's efforts By Dylan Belden, Albert Lea Tribune
"It's all about packaging ..."
....That means everybody has a duty to promote Albert Lea to people they know elsewhere, she said.
It's a job Eaton has been doing for years, and a duty she said is key to the job of mayor. And although the position is not supposed to be full time, Eaton said it will take a full-time effort.
"There's no such thing as part time," she said.
