Unemployment benefits are based on how much you WORK, not on how much you don't work..

If you work 1 month in a 24 month period and get laid off you might qualify for $25 a week if that..

You have to build up benefits by WORKING.. No worky, no benefits..

That's how it starts out, then President Pinocchio extends and extends and extends and...

One just needs to take the initiative and effort.
Of course Alky and Irish think everything should be handed to them.

You're using straw man arguments.  We don't disagree that much on the basics.  You said, "It should be 26 weeks, no more."  The vast majority of people laid off that I know come down to exactly that.  I only know of one guy who got an extension past 26 weeks, and it was so he could train for another field.

And I've never received unemployment benefits either, so not sure why you're attacking me in the quoted part.  I just believe workers who EARNED the bare minimum of benefits shouldn't be stripped of them.  Otherwise it's just more of the middle class attacking each other and taking what little benefits blue collar workers have left.  UI is just the BARE MINIMUM that workers expect should they find a pink slip next to the time clock.

I don't think that's too much to ask for, but I'm sure the shareholders hoping for a bigger dividend check will tell you different.  The CEO needs another raise, and those corporate retreats and expense accounts certainly aren't getting any cheaper.   :;):

I'll agree that initiative and effort certainly comes in handy, I wouldn't downplay that.  I know a couple people who just recently ended their long job search.  Just in time considering this time of year the dough comes in handy for gifts.

Bush Extends Unemployment Benefits (November 21, 2008)

The White House says President Bush signed into law a bill that Congress approved to keep unemployment checks flowing to jobless Americans through the holiday season.

Its passage followed a report Thursday saying that new claims by laid-off workers for jobless aid had reached a 16-year high and the number of people looking for work had surged past 10 million.
