After talking with a co-worker, our guess is 1940.

I would have to say it would have to be late 20's to early 30's

It's before the Freeborn Bank building was built, because that's the southeast corner of William & Broadway behind the tree.  I'd have to look at one of the recent renovation articles, but circa 1923 is when that was built.  The large building down the block with the recessed balcony is the present Brick Furniture building.  Over the top of the more distant buildings you can see the top of the courthouse clock tower.  So it can't be any earlier than 1888 at the other extreme.

Just did a quick search, found this article, the bank building was completed in 1923.

My guess would be 1914-1915.  Evidently automobiles were around, although not in the picture.  But looking at the beefy timber frame around the tree, they must be there to keep something out, just thinking it wouldn't have to be that substantial if it were just horse-powered transportation on the streets.

Good job, Replicant!  1915 was the date of the picture.

I wonder when they stopped having the big Christmas tree...even just in a park or someplace away from the traffic.

Thats some good detective work but I think you are incorrect on which intersection it is.  I think if you look more carefully you will find that that is the St Paul Clothiers building (currently the Bible Book Store) behind the tree.  The tall building down the street at the next coner is the Woolworth building before the fire in 1942.  If you check out Bev Jacksons new book about Freeborn county there are some good pictures of that building both before and after the fire.  So therefore i believe this is in the intersection of Broadway and Main, the only intersection big enough for it.

Sorry Wolfie, that is most definitely not the St. Paul Clothier or "Syndicate Block" Building.  The intersection is in fact William and Broadway, and the building you are looking at is the one that was on that corner prior to the bank or Medical Arts building.

Take a look at this item on eBay, this is a panoramic photo taken at the same intersection in 1908, looking east.  You'll notice the buildings are all the same as in the Christmas tree photo.  Across the street to the north is the other bank building, now Shoff Chiropractic.

On the far left of this panoramic photo is what would be the Woolworth corner.  Offhand, since this photo is 1908, I'm not even sure if the one that's there would be the building that burned - it may even pre-date that building.

This listing ends Nov. 9 so the link may not last beyond that.

Please don't take it that way.  You have an interest in Albert Lea history, as do I.  Based on the reference points I mentioned previously, I was pretty certain as to the location, less certain about the year.

When you suggested the corner of Broadway and Main, I looked for a different picture to compare and knew that the eBay photo would be a good one to use.

Looking at the historical pictures are a great diversion.  I didn't mean to discourage you.
