Although this looks similar to the current church, the current church has three entance doors in front, The steeple and belfry are gone, and the upper front window is different.  In the back of the church the nave is gone, and one can see that the brick on that side matches the new brick used on the newer school.  On the back side one could state that there were modifications made after this picture was taken, but on the front side the bricks match the rest of the building leading me to wonder if this is the same church?  Can anyone fill me in on what happened?

It's the same church building, at least the "nave" section.

Coincidentally, Ed Shannon wrote an article about the Catholic Church in this Sunday's Tribune (2/27)...here's the link:

I'd never heard the word "nave" before so I had to look it up.

Quote

nave
n.
The central part of a church, extending from the narthex to the chancel and flanked by aisles.

What's a narthex and what's a chancel?

Gotta love circular definitions:

nar·thex    ( P )  Pronunciation Key  (närthks)
n.
A portico or lobby of an early Christian or Byzantine church or basilica, originally separated from the nave by a railing or screen.
An entrance hall leading to the nave of a church.

chan·cel    ( P )  Pronunciation Key  (chnsl)
n.
The space around the altar of a church for the clergy and sometimes the choir, often enclosed by a lattice or railing.
