Yesterday a couple really young bunnies showed up in my yard. I told the girls to leave them alone so that they wouldn't get stressed out since they were so young. Well the kids left them alone, but, about 10pm we heard a bunny screaming out in the yard.  The wife ran out to see what happened and what she found was the neighbors cat with a bunny in it's mouth.  The cat made a quick exit taking the bunny with him.

So the wife made me go turn on all the yard lights and try to find the other one. (I actually looked for about 30 mins before I realized how pointless it was.)

Well today the bunny shows back up in the yard at the same time the neighbors cat did. So I chased the cat away and I put the bunny in a portable 8' x 8' dog kennel to keep him safe.

The problem I have now is what do I do with the bunny.  If I let it go the cat will kill it in pretty short order, but, if I keep it in the kennel chances are it won't make it (from what I've heard they don't take well to being in a cage.)

Does anyone have any ideas on what would be the best thing to do with the bunny?

I don't know much about rabbits, but your neighbor should keep his cat in the house. I hope this link helps.

Because the baby bunny is orphaned wouldn't the humane society or DNR care for it? I would give one or both of them a call.

The Humane Society only takes pets.  The DNR would probably release it at the state park if it was old enough to be on it's own.  They would be worth a try.

I've rebuilt the nest, it was over in the park and the city had mowed over. So, later tonight I'll put him back by the nest and hopefully his mom will come back(and not the cat). I'll wait until the wife and girls are in bed though, I don't feel like listening to the wife and kids crying again if it is killed like the other one.

Liberal, I think once you have touched the bunny, the mother will not come back.  I would say the best bet is releasing it out in the woods somewhere, that is if you think it's old enough to survive on it's own.  If not then I guess you could try and care for it for a couple weeks until it was a little bigger and able to survive on it's own and then release it somewhere away from your neighborhood so the cat doesn't get it.

I have to agree with shallow on this one.  If you have some old window screens, they make great rabbit cages when nailed together.

The link that Newbie supplied said that less than 10% survive. So I got him to head back over towards his nest in the park.  The link said they could be placed up to 10 feet away so I'm sure he will be OK.

I think the mom will still return according to that rabbit website the moms have been known to come back for several days looking for lost babies and since I didn't touch the bunny she shouldn't have a problem with him. It was pretty hard to resist the urge to pick him up but I knew it wasn't good for him so I used a small leafy branch from an oak tree to get him next to the kennel and then I just lifted up one side and he ran under it.

That rabbit website said the mother would return in the early morning so I waited until about 1am last night and then I went outside and turned on all the yard lights again (I'll bet the neighbors love me for that) and I coaxed him towards his nest. Which was surprisingly easy to do, so, I'm guessing he wanted to get home and knew where home was.

Today I had to stop the neighbors stupid cat from killing a ground squirrel or chipmunk(I'm not sure what you call them). I figured something was up since it was sitting there staring at the opening to my rain gutter. So, I chased him away and then flushed out the chipmunk so the cat wouldn't know where he was when he came back.

I wish I knew whose cat it was so I could ask them to keep it indoors. I guess I'll just soak him with a bucket of water next time I see him. That's worked in the past with wandering cats that have come around.

Liberal does the cat have a collar?  If not it's probably a stray.  You could call the pound or Humane Society to find a home for it. FYI Cats have a 3 mile radius in which they hunt etc.  I wish owners would realize it's not safe for their cats to be outside.
Great job with the bunny.  I'm glad the site helped.  A stray cat killed two bunnies we had nesting in our yard.  We were pretty sad about it (my girls found them).  We like the rabbits, squirrells etc.  My cats like to watch them from the windows.
