Mr.Tarzan: i do believe you have opened a can of worms! The regulars, reservists & the national guard are indeed quite different in my eyes. Yes they all serve at the descretion of the comander in cheif but in what capacity! i agree that the continued deployment of the guard will ultimatley gut it. i also belive that it will also take its toll of the active regular force. this whole mess started when we began electing presidents who shirked their duty to serve their country in the military!!!!! i would suggest your reading the book " Dereliction of Duty" by Lt. Col. Robert Patterson. It documents how the military was severly downsized & how the military has reacted to these so called comanders in chiefs. are we the lone defenders of the free world? is the united nations a joke???? where is the rest of the world???? this whole bit of being the worlds policeman is taking a huge toll on our economy as well as chewing up the lives of a lot of young men! when we go to war it should be under honorable conditions not like it has been as with nam or iraq! yes, i support the troops but not the political policies that are being espoused! Perhaps this next election will change this. if it were up to me all able bodied males & females would serve in some fashion & the be in reserve for a period of time. this in its self would level the playing feild & give you a trained reserve to draw from in a state of emergency. if we want to live in the land of the free we must be wiling to defend it as well.

That is exactly the way Isreal is setup.  When a person turns 18 they enter military service, after 4 years they can either re-up or go about their personal lives.  This way Isreal knows they have a greater pool to choose from, but considering the circumstances and the area in which they live is probably the biggest factor for that law..

[b]I am an American Soldier sworn to defend this country against all enemies foreign and domestic. Do I like the fact that as a National Guard Soldier I am about to be deployed to an active combat zone for a year or more ? NO. Will I do what is asked of me by those appointed over me ? YES. I don't have to like what I do when I am wearing the uniform of the US Military I only have to do what I am told to do. I am good at my job and I do enjoy my time in NG. I am prior active duty and have been a few places as well. This however will be my first time in an active combat zone. God willing we will all come back alive and in the same way we left.

He was called up to active duty last year, he was gone for something like 6 months if I remember right (a different guard unit, not around this area).  He got lucky though, they sent him to an Army base down south to fill in for other activated people, so he didn't have to go into any combat zone.  His enlistment ended not long after he got back, so he's done now, he wasn't interested in re-enlisting with all thats going on.
