Heard from some of the patrons last night.  No open bar--open for special events (weddings, dances, etc) only.  No bingo or charitable gambling.

What's the world coming to when taxes are so high you can't make a profit on alcohol and charitable gambling, even with donated labor?

Changes in MN charitable gaming laws have made it to were you will see less gaming in the clubs. The new law has effected the payments and expenditures.

For now on bars who support charitable gaming will be paid a percentage of profit from sales of the game.

Bars with ticket booths will be paid half as much for rental space as bars who sell behind the counter.

If this was an effort for the state to make more money on gaming revenue it surely is going to backfire.

A box of 3196 pull tabs cost $42.94 MN tax is $40.00 If a bar who sells 17 boxes a month with an average deposit of $350 and does not have a booth they will reach the maximum rental allowed by current law.

Prior to the change in the law minimum rent was $500.00 a month no matter how many boxes they sold.

The state also has to refund taxes back to the organization for tickets not sold.

As I metioned a $350 deposit per 17 boxes is half of what the box was designed to make. Therefore bar owners will pull the boxes faster when they are only half sold to ensure a deposit and not a loss.

So 17 boxes x 3196 = 54332 tickets if all were sold with $680 in tax to the state.

So 17 boxes x 1500 unsold tickets = a refund of $319.00 back to the charitable organization.

Not to mention the guy that sells 5 to 6 boxes a month is going to tell the oganiztion to take them out.

Thanks for the math lesson, Geo.  I'm involved with one of the larger service clubs in town, and charitable gambling IS down, and State taxes are WAY up.  It's too bad that the State gas gotten so greedy--by definition, all profits from Charitable Gambling go to support charitable organizations.  Our organization gives away nearly $60,000 a year in funds, plus member time, mileage, and personal contributions.  All of our contributions stay LOCAL, and we support Boys & Girls basketball, hockey, Soccer, Scouts, outdoor activities, veterans homes, senior needs, scholarships, bands, educational programs, drug awareness--all worthy LOCAL programs.

The State has taken so much in taxes and administrative costs that it is increasingly hard to make enough money to support these charities--the net proceeds on charitable gambling are no more than they were 20 years ago, despite DOUBLE our membership.  Another UNINTENDED CONSEQUENCE of government action--they've spent so much in Administrative costs that they are killing the activity they are supposed to oversee.  Tragically, the COMPETITION for CHARITABLE gambling?  STATE-RUN LOTTERIES, who have a monopoly on the activity, and whose proceeds don't stay LOCAL!

This is sure a big suprise--- the state has gotten greedy, the next thing they will mandate that you sell pull tabs to keep your lisence, just give them all the money. :(
