Thanks, we adopted one of the Parvo survivors from the shelter. He was a shepherd mix, his mom was a rescue from Pine Ridge, and Pokey was born at the shelter. When we got Pokey he was already named because he'd been poked by needles so many times, and we kept that name.

He just turned a year old on the 1st and he seemed to be in good health until Wednesday when he'd yelp going up and down steps. We thought he'd maybe pulled a muscle wrestling with my daughter's dog so we took him to Skyline vet for a full body xray. The xray showed he had an inflamed small intestine so they diagnosed his pain as Crohns disease and gave us some pain medication.

On Friday he quit eating so we took him back to vet and blood work showed he was in complete kidney failure. The vet felt like he could make it through this if we got enough fluids in him so we gave him subcutaneous IVs on Friday and Saturday. On Saturday night he seemed much worse so we called the vet and he thought Pokey would still pull through it.

About 5:30 Sunday morning he started whining and was laying on the floor, so I got a blanket and laid down with him until about 8am when I realized he was dying. So I woke up my wife and called my daughter and they spent an hour petting him and holding his paw. At about 9am we decided to call the vet and as my wife was talking to the vet and holding Pokey's paw he just quit breathing and passed away peacefully.

I've never been a dog person but Pokey was a really great dog.

This was taken on Friday at the vet.

Cool dog, he looks great in the pic.. I guess kidney failure is the best way to go.. You just go to sleep without any pain..

Sorry for your loss Lib. Skyline vet is a good choice. When we lived in AL we always took our dogs and cat to Dr.Minear there. He has since passed, I don't know who the Doc is now. Again, sorry for your loss. :(

Thanks, we really like Skyline vet. and we've been going there for years. Years ago we took our Pomeranian to another vet and they diagnosed this nasty cough as being CHF and put her on heart medicine. When we took her to Skyline they properly diagnosed her as having a collapsed esophagus and said she had a good heart. She's been off heart medicine for years and the evil little ankle biter is still alive and barking all day long.
