I doubt the city can.  The workers probably have a contract (union) that guarantees them the pay, work or not.

If they can run the street sweeper in a parking lot then why for gods sake cant the run on down town once in a awhile.  Its been since Sept. since they have done that.  With all the rain we had it started flooding the gutter, went down and cleaned the drain myself.

There is serious talk of closing the Mankato sort facility for the USPS.
Turns out that part of the CBA, they cannot layoff any workers. They have to find them new jobs.  Some I am sure will take early retirement, and some will probably not relocate to wherever the 'new' jobs are at, but still makes you wonder how many other places this will happen at and in the end the only money being saved is the cost of maintaining a building.

Before anyone takes this out of context, I am not advocating or pleased that anyone lose their job, but as a cost saving measure we all know that sometimes you have to let people go, or you go out of business.  You can only raise prices so much before people stop buying.

The city of Albert Lea might want to be careful if they are "losing" alot of money. They will get taken over by an Emergency Manager like is happening in Michigan. With all the local corruption and if they are using a crazy amount of money like it sounds: they just might want to start doing things differently. I doubt they want that to happen.

Most Union contracts If they guaranatee any hours I believe its 32. What about the rest of city employees that lost hours at the court house. I would say some supervisor was just looking for hours for his employees.

I guess they could have been back at the city shop playing cribabge. Using workers who have a minumin hour contract to perform a function that is benificial to the community I say Out-Standing.

There hasn't been a lot of need for snow removal this winter.

That has to help the budget, not to mention the environment a bit.

Doesn't it?

Well if they are back at the shop playing cards at leaste they are not burning up all the cheap fuel it takes to the run the machines and the wear and tear on them . yup it would be more economical to let them stay back and pick there noises , or heck have them walk the streets and pick up garbage
