It has been a question I've had for many years Mopar, Just the simple logistical advantages AL has is superior many other cities with way more business.

^ Unfortunatly our logistical advantage is far outweighed by our leadership disadvantage.

Attitude change. It hasn't happened in my lifetime. The close-minded bigotry isn't working socially. Malwart economics is failing. People who value cemented parking lots over creative landscaping. AL is one corner of a once formidable but now collapsing white reservation.
Attitude change or become a piece of dust adrift from a new emerging social fabric.

^ when I think about it that would probably be the biggest reason I don't live there anymore.

QUOTE (Self-Banished @ Sep. 22 2012,11:31 am)
QUOTE I gotta ask you double H, how do you get companies in that pay more? and if you do they're most likely gonna need people with more talent than AL's present population has. The old "Albert Lea poor workforce" excuse again? That is nothing but a sorry statement our city "leaders" use for their failure to attract industry here. There plenty of qualified/ underemployed people in this area. We have a lot of people who drive 30+ miles to work here. You know why? Because my company offers superior wages and benefits, that's why. This town simply does not try hard enough to attract businesses. I remember a Tribune article from about 10 years ago when Sparks said we didn't have the facilities to make a software (or electronics, or whatever it was) company "comfortable" here, but we did have what it took for a meat packing company to thrive here. That's crap. He just wanted to benefit his contacts in the meat packing industry.
I don't remember what company it was that it was publicized was looking at possibly locating here. I do remember some letters to the editor that were opposed to something high-tech coming here because the majority of our local workforce would be underqualified.
Never mind the white collar jobs it would have brought here, attracting more. Never mind the local youth who might have come back here after college to work for these companies. Let's just pound the nails into the coffin now. "If it's not something that I'm able to do, we don't need it here."
It was sad to read that, but that's the attitude we have here. Nobody wants it to grow if it isn't something that will benefit them directly. I'm not talking about bumpouts, courthouses, and new schools. I'm talking about industry.
