Its more likely a marketing strategy than anything else. People are just more generous and giving during the holidays between Thanksgiving and Christmas than they are at other times of the year. Also, they get more mileage out of the generous volunteer's during this time. It's easy to find volunteers to man the kettle's for a few months, but it would be difficult to rely on these same people throughout the year from a practical standpoint. imho
