Responses have run the gamut of the above questions. So far, there has been very little need for censorship--only a handful of posts have been deleted or changed, and only by a handful of moderators.
Your vote and ideas can help guide what you want out of this Forum.

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances." The Constitution's framers believed that freedom of inquiry and liberty of expression were the hallmarks of a democratic society.

I totally disagree with complete and total jerks on this board, but I'd never call to ban their posts. That's what a wimp who can't fight back does.

Well said Madd Max. But Jim has no interest in democracy, he's a Bush lover. That says all that needs to be said. You see, in Jims world you only let the peons speak when they agree with you, or they serve your purpose.
Jims better than all the rest of us, Just ask him.

See, that's were we disagree, Pot Ted. Why does it have to be a fight? In my book, "I disagree with you and here's why..." goes a lot further than some of your more notable repasts, like, "Yer a tard!"
The name-calling degrades the whole forum.

Botto 82, you might be onto something here, I agree with you to a point.
Where I disagree is that what one person does makes the whole forum look bad.
I dont think the people that come here are that stupid, the moderators might be, but not the people.
What you say or do has nothing to do with what I think about the forum as a whole.

Oh for God sake, take a stroll through the archives........as far back as they go. Minnow, Paul Harvey, TTT and some various other names that he's went by has been rude, arrogant and down right obnoxious from the get go. Big deal....he adds spice to some of these threads and damn good input too. Many think it's a lot more fun with him than without him and I agree.
As far as the (little green guy ) as Liberal calls him, I'm the one that ask to have him restored when the forum changed servers. Sometimes he's just so appropriate, worth a hundred words!!
Please don't even bring up making this forum nice "FOR THE CHILDREN". I've never seen anything here that kids wouldn't be able to handle. Give your kids some credit. They can check out porn, learn how to make bombs, join cults and find out how to become a better anorexic right here on the internet. I don't think the A.L. forum even comes close to being a threat in corrupting them. If kids are too young, then by golly it's the parents responsibility to know what their doing on the internet. Young kids would probably find this forum boring anyway.
Look at the numbers, we have new members everyday and the number of visitors grow all the time. Why? Because this is a great forum. People can come here find out the news and express themselves "FREELY" about whatever's on their mind. Wasn't that the whole purpose of starting this forum in the first place? The A.L. Tribune won't get to the bottom of anything, only local government friendly news is reported. Letters to the editor are edited or not published at all for being "not nice" even though it's true. The tribune's forum proved to be a farse, leading to the reason that this Forum was started.
What has changed here to give reason for putting down a set of rules that wern't necessary before? No one is anymore obscene, rude, vulgar or argumentative than they ever were. (Again, look through the archives!!) The only difference is a change in moderators which the majority of aren't too keen on the notion of editing and banning anyway. We possibly have some "newer" posters who are more sensitive and expect more political correctness, so their feelings won't be hurt.
This forum was started so people could say whatever they wanted without being "bokked" or banished and that's the way it should stay. If my feelings are hurt or if I'm horribly offended by something on here then it's my choice not to visit again. If this forum's etiquette or lack there of isn't for everyone then so be it, it's our own choice!!

I dont think the people that come here are that stupid, the moderators might be, but not the people.
What you say or do has nothing to do with what I think about the forum as a whole. |
Please explain to me, following your reasoning, the following:
Jean Eaton is one person, has admitted to committing a felony, refuses to step down as mayor. Do her actions reflect on Albert Lea as a community? After all, she is just one person. And if the people are not too stupid to recognize that, they should not be upset that she won't step down as mayor.
Now where is the difference?
