I got a questionnaire from the Chamber with a bunch of questions for county commissioner candidates and city council candidates. It was from their Governmental Affairs Board (muy importante) and they said that they feel that it's their responsiblity to inform and educate the public on the issues. (it doesn't say if illegal loans are one of those issues). The more I read the questions the more I thought about the pigeon-hole principle.

The biggest problem I have with the questionnaire is that it's designed to categorize us with stupid questions like, "The City recently established the "new" Albert Lea Economic Development Agency. Would you actively lead efforts to bring the county government into this board and endorse the "Authority" as the official Economic Development Agency in the entire county?" the question is followed by 5 multiple choices from strongly agree to strongly disagree.

Personally, I think that's way to complex of a question to expect a multiple choice answer. The answer I would like to give them is that I have a problem with the hiring process that they used for the director and if they went through a real hiring process and hired a real professional economic developer, I would consider it, but, the way it is structured now, I would never support it. (look what 26 years did for Albert Lea)

It seems to me that if they really wanted to educate the public about issues and they weren't just looking to pigeon-hole the candidates then they wouldn't have sent a multiple choice questionnaire. Hopefully the other candidates see it for what it is.

Ann Austin, who generally covers Freeborn County will cover the county races and Jennifer Rogers, city reporter, will cover council races. They will do live interviews, submitting stories based on those, as well as send out questionnaires to local candidates on their beats.

Prior to the primary and general election Each person vying for a seat in which more than two candidates are running will receive a questionnaire to present their position on issues. Typed responses are requested to eliminate misunderstandings and must be returned to the Tribune managing editor within a week. On Friday, Sept. 10, prior to the primary, each candidate's response will be published. The questions will be in the candidates' own words, however they may be edited for length. Each questionnaire will run roughly 8 inches, so candidates who stray off the question will be edited down. A similar schedule is planned for the general election

Liberal; Have you recieved this one yet?  It sounds like they will let you answer questions in your own words, instead of multiple choice.

I'm curious what means the Chamber (Govt. Affairs Board) plans to use to educate the public. In the Tribune, a mailing perhaps?  Will they endorse the candidate who "strongly agrees" with there
power hunger.  Obviously looking for 'yes' men.  It will be interesting to see how they use this and present the candidates answers.  Liberal; did you send it back?
