I was asked by my hubby to bring this up.  He works at one of Albert Lea's larger employers.  Unfortunately, the jobs can be a little dangerous at times even with the utmost in safety being required.  He came home one night after getting a chunk of steel removed from his finger.  He had been in the E.R. for more than three hours.  When I've taken my daughter in or other family members it seems to be the same thing.  I realize sometimes an ear infection doesn't happen during regular business hours, but I have always called ahead and "they" told me to come in.
So why does it take an hour to be seen, an hour to get a diagnosis, and two hours to get released?  From certain rooms you can view the docs behind the desk.  They do not appear busy.  I wouldn't worry if I saw them going from room to room, but they're just sittting there.  If they're waiting for information couldn't they be doing something else at the same time?  Or at least tell you that's what is going on.
Don't get me wrong... I would not want their job, nor the nurses, but I've heard Austin's E.R. is much faster.  Hubby said the lead men have even thought to go there because it would cost less in the long run, and be less time the lead man has to spend away from the job.
I'm curious as to what others have to say.  Maybe someone can help me understand better.

No explanation, no ryme and no reason.  Albert Lea's medical practices have always been this way.  I've heard it suggested that we should start deducting our time x hr.wage from our bills. This is a fair suggestion if we could just get Mayo Health Care systems to go for it.  We have a very inefficient system, and always have.

I know what you mean about the long wait. It has happened to me. I think what they do though is take the worst ones first....so if you happen to be there for a sore throat you are going to wait. When I was there one night there was one chair left to sit in. I think half the welfare people were using the ER for a regular doctor office. Why not?...It's free! Maybe they should do a better job of screening when people come in. I sat for 3 1/2 hours and finally decided I would rather die at home. I went in first thing in the morning. I am talking about the Urgent Care unit however and not the regular ER. I finally decided to leave when I heard one young mother say she had been there 4 hours and not that many people were moving out of the room. That seems a little rediculous to me.

That is a good point about the ER, it is busier because of people with no insurance. But it seems the clinic, ER or Urgent Care are inefficient in getting people taken care of, busy or not. I can see taking the more serious cases first, but sometimes you're the only one there?????????  I too would much rather die at home!LOL

I was just at urgent care a week ago and there were a few people there.  I was greeted and registered immediately.  I was taken in to see the nurse within 5 minutes and into see the doctor within 15.  Maybe this was a fluke thing but it seemed everyone was efficiently serviced.  Maybe I am biased though because my aunt was working at the time. :D
