The new aggregate tax for materials excavated in Freeborn County is probably long overdue but it needs to go a few steps further to be fair to all users. All us contractors will pay 7 cents per ton to haul material on township and county roads in return townships and county road funds will receive a percentage of the money collected. What needs to be added to the users of the infastructure is a tax on all the commodities hauled to market and garbage hauled out of the county. 7 cents per ton equates to 0.2 cents per bushel which is a minor charge considering that a lot of the roads damages come from hauling during spring load restrictions. Most contractors are shut down during this period but grain elevators are paying a premium price. This is a local tax that would stay local and be used local.

You may be on the right track Agg Man but where do you stop. Manure haulers, Fertilizer deliveries, livestock haulers, milk transports, fuel transports, steel delivery etc. It would be a great revenue source if you could get it in place and it would tax the heavy haulers as it should be. Good Luck with your endevours.

What about gravel imported from other counties/states? They pay the tax too, right?

Agg Man, the way I see it, the county will be charging you the $0.07/ton. You will pass on the cost to your customer, which in most cases will be the county or townships. It's just a full circle, and will create more paper work. On top of that, our highway department is over worked already. I've heard that time and time again.

Believe it or not, what is starting to happen is that the supply of quality aggregate is running out around the Metro area (oh duh, huh). The large suppliers are moving our direction (southeastern minnesota)from the north and east, and will be buying up and exporting material in large quantities sooner than you think.
