Minnow, why would you need a unpublished number anyway?  If you have a published number, first of all, someone would have to WANT to call you.  As far as phone solicitors, they're not picking up the Albert Lea phone book to look up your number, they're computer generated, you should know that in your line of work.  As far as "jerking the minnow", sometimes, some of us would gladly do it.  :D

Wrong...unpublished numbers are not added to the pool. In other words you pay booty for more privacy. 99% of all calls will stop with a new private number. I believe it's only $2-3 more monthly and well worth it.

In the old days it looked odd if one wasn't listed or locked his doors at night but times have changed. Most folks are no longer listed. It's a no-brainer...well worth the few extra dollars for privacy.

Too many young people are freaks these days I guess...Responsible people feel they have to hide now.

I have heard about an interesting way to deal with the telemarketing problem. A windshield glass company would call this guy once a week to ask if he needed windshield repair or if he knew of anyone who needed windshield repair. He would say no and tell them to take him name off the list, but if never seemed to work. They gave him a toll free number to call if he needed repairs. He then started his own campaign of fighting back. He would call them several times a day and tell them "NO I don't need windshield repair and NO I don't know anyone who does". Well needless to say since it was on their dime, they got the message real quick and he hasn't been bothered since. Maybe it would work with all telemarketing. Just be polite enough to let them give their toll free if you have any "questions" and then start calling them back.

I had a telemarketeer call once and asked to speak to my wife, I told them that last week the b#tch ran off with another guy, but I said if you find her, tell her I want my d$mn hunting dog back.  They actually apologized to me.  :D

A co-worker of mine is a very sweet person.  She got a call one night while eating supper, she politely told the tele-marketer to please hold on she had someone knocking at her door she then set the phone on the counter and went back to eating her supper.  She soon heard a busy signal from the receiver.  She didn't have to be rude but got her point across.

Minnow- already have the unpublished number- but after a few years your name and number transfer from list to list faster than a case of crabs would at a Bangkok whore house!  Sure, if I want to change numbers every couple of years it would work but it is only a temporary solution to part of the problem.  Gabby is right, most all telemarketing companies use a computer to call numbers at random, and when a 'live' person answers it is transferred to an available agent.  This is why sometimes you answer the phone and after a few seconds of silence get disconnected, or even worse, transferred to a telemarketer.  Minnow, you really should study an industry before you make claims.  Christ, my number is on the states DNC list and I still receive calls, so do plenty of others that I know who are on this list as well.  By law telemarketers are supposed to buy this list and not call anyone on it, but they do not even do that so what makes you think that an unlisted number is any more effective once it make it to telemarketers lists?

Tiger, long story short:  Last season, I paid for NFL ticket from directv.  3rd weekend of games my access to view NFL ticket channels gone.  After 2 hours on the phone, directv told me that I need to have a phone line connected to the receiver in order to be able to view package (none had been connected up to this point but I was able to watch for 2 weeks?) and that I had to have it connected continuously or they would disconnect the package again.  Cell only option would not work in a case like this, so it is either my love of football or my want to not be bothered by telemarketers that has to suffer.

That's simple not true. I've never had a telemarketer problem because I've:

1. Maintained a private number.

2. Didn't give out my number to porn sites or any business you don't what their policy is.

I've had one call in about 6 years. When I had a public line it was just sick...

Solve your own problem or just hang up. You have no obligation to speak what so ever.

I like the call them idea.  Next time someone gets a call, post the number and we can all call them.
