MASON CITY — Five people have been hired to head the Blue Zones Project initiative in Mason City, Blue Zones spokeswoman Angela Determan told the Mason City Council.

Determan, Blue Zones Community program manager, gave the council an update on the Blue Zones Project at a council workshop Tuesday.

“It’s extremely fun working as a group knowing we’re on the cutting edge of healthy living,” she told the council. “Now we really need to start the certification process and take advantage of the resources available.”

The goal is for the city to become certified as a Blue Zones Community. The process will involve securing involvement by a minimum of 50 percent of the 20 employers identified by the community as the largest and most influential in the community and participation by at least 20 percent of local residents age 14 and older, Determan said.

In addition to Determan, the Blue Zones employees include: Ellen Kehr, organization lead; Marty Garrett, engagement lead; Colleen Young, initiative organizer; and Rachel Pike, volunteer service coordinator.

The positions of community program manager, organization lead and engagement lead are funded by the Blue Zones Project.

City Administrator Brent Trout said the city will provide start-up costs for the initiative organizer, which will eventually be funded by the business community, local foundations “and other grants we intend to seek.”

The city will also fund expanded hours for the volunteer coordinator position.

Determan, who has taken a two-year leave of absence from the volunteer position, will oversee the Blue Zones office over the next two years and work with the schools and city government on their certifications.

As organization lead, Kehr, who was previously involved with the Blue Zones pilot project in Albert Lea, Minn., will work with community volunteers to encourage worksite, grocery store and restaurant officials to take action toward becoming Blue Zones-certified.

Garrett, the engagement lead, will work with volunteers to encourage members of the public to commit to take action to transform their lives on a personal level.

The initiative organizer will be the sole remaining Blue Zones position in the future as the city continues to follow and develop Blue Zones activities.

Pike, the volunteer service coordinator, will oversee volunteers for the city and for the Blue Zones Project over the next two years.

Behind the scenes, a 14-member Blue Zones Power 9 Team of local individuals representing various areas of expertise, is developing a community blueprint, described as a road map of actions to take to accomplish a healthier community.

The leadership team, composed of 25 to 30 members, will oversee implementation of permanent changes in community policy, social networks and the community as a whole based on the community blueprint.

The City Council agreed to provide feedback on possible Blue Zones activities at its Aug. 23 workshop.

A communitywide kickoff of the Blue Zones activities will be held at the end of November, Determan said.

The Blue Zones Project is the centerpiece of Gov. Terry Branstad’s Healthiest State Initiative to make Iowa the healthiest state in the nation by 2016.

Wonder if they hired Kehr though Express Services so they could avoid the Equal Opportunity Employment Act like Freeborn County did when they hired her.

Do you suppose she will funnel money to her husband's workplace by having the Chamber in Albert lea stuff envelopes like they did when she pushed her way into the Blue Zones here.

Hope she quit smoking.

Sounds like the beginnings of the metropolitan council up here in the cities. Next thing you know you'll have light rail service between Northwood and Myrtle. :dunce:

^They all can, they're called politiciations, no longer are they leaders, they are nothing more than whiney control-freaks who pine for "their turn" to f' things up,to maybe get a little glorification and self satisfaction at the expense of others.
