What tha hell?
Council visits scrap metal controversy Updated: 06-24-2005 05:07:27 PM
(KAAL) -- Albert Lea City Council is scheduled to deal with two controversial issues when it meets next Monday night.
For the past two months, Albert Lea administration has looked into the practice of allowing private contractors to haul away scrap metal belonging to the city.
That practice became an issue following complaints that Bob Oakland turned 150 yards of abandoned railroad track at the Farmland Foods site into more than six thousand dollars profit.
When council meets, members will discuss whether Oakland should be required to reimburse some of that profit.
Recently, Albert Lea implemented a different method for hauling scrap metal, going back to the way it was done in the early 90's.
Victoria Simonson, Albert Lea City Manager "that is that city staffers are handling our own scrap iron, getting weighted receipts and bringing back a check for that amount and at the same time I'll be tracking the hours that goes into that."
Also Monday night, council members will determine how they'll go about appointing a mayor to serve through the end of 2006.
Former Mayor Jean Eaton resigned earlier this month.

Don't worry, they will more than likely run out of time with all the 5 minute reasons why so and so should be mayor. My bet is appointing the mayor will be all they will get to.

TTT you missed the best part of the agenda. The City Manager thinks that Mr. Bob Oakland should reimburse the City an additional $573.00 for half of scrap iron sales received in 2004. That isn't even half of what he might have gotten.

How did Oakland suddenly become the bad guy? He only did what he was allowed to do by a certain employee of the city. Go after the city employee who arranged to deal and you stop this kind of crap.....................ned

My thoughts exactly! Why make Oakland out to be a bad guy. He did what anyone would have done. Go after the one that gave it away.

It yet again goes to show that our local government does not understand the definition of accountable.
If they do make him pay it back than will the city employee that Oakland paid the "finders fee" to have to pay back his cut, and will they publicly say who this city employee is that got ahold of Oakland, or will it be held as confidential to protect this person.
Quick question. The city employee that was doing this, was he ever in the paper for forclosure or is it a different employee?

The City of Albert Lea wants to stick to this theory that there was this "deal", a deal to which there is no contract, and which was never disclosed until long after a city staff member admitted he had lied about removing railroad scrap. (If there really was a deal, so many laws were broken, you would think the City would be ticked off).
Why $573? Then miss vicky gets to assert that it was only $1,000 involved. But more to the point, its a concession on the part of Oakland. He can buy out of the controversy for $573. If I was the city employee, I would give Oakland the money.
While some have defended vernie boy. HE SOLD OUT. He just plain SOLD OUT. And this weak council did the same.

Methinks, you were right on for the first part. It has been the same employee all along. It is someone, who can't manage to pay his own finances, who is in charge of a "very" large part of the city's budget, it's your money folks. Be watchin'.................ned

More to the point, little miss vicky asked in mock surprise, "and what would make a city employee just give it away, knowing he would lose his job?"
When pointing out his personal financial problems and the foreclosures, it was said to be hitting below the belt. Gee, you think if he was having financial problems, miss vicky and vernie too, he might be looking at other avenues for finances?
