I have been in the right seat several times myself. In my brothers plane the instruments were worth as much as the old plane he flew. He would dial everything in according to his flight plan and after take off his biggest job was maintaining radio contact up until landing. I've been in helecopters too, and I will tell you that is a workout.

I flew a plane for my 37th birthday - a Cessna C-170. Although it was only an hour long, it was a thrill I'll never forget!

Ive had some time in the cockpit of a KC-135 during the Gulf War. I wasn't a pilot just a avionics mechanic on a check ride. Ive got some pix of the burning oil fields from the left side window. Maybe I'll scan em and put em up.

I have the ability to make the 1200 meter shot, but some targets deserve the up close kill, where you can watch the life leave the eyes while the blood ebbs from the body.

For those who REALLY like aviation, the big Oshkosh convention is on next week, through Aug. 1. It's the largest aviation event in the world. There is an airshow (but I don't watch it)--there are huge exhibit halls, factory built aircraft, homebuilt aircraft, kit aircraft, ultralights, light sport (no medical required), helicopters, experimentals--if it's aviation, it's there. This year will feature the 75th anniversary of the DC-3 and the B-17s with the largest collection in many years (incidentally, if you want to see or even FLY IN a B-17--one is available in Rochester Fri-Sat-Sunday.
Hotel rooms are at a premium in Oshkosh--the simple way is to camp--showers and porta-potties are available. The event is especially friendly to NON-aviation types.
LIBBIE WARNING!
You will not encounter many of your own kind in Oshkosh--most pilots are not liberal, they take responsibility for themselves.
You may be offended by the National Anthem, or people saluting the flag.
You are likely to see anti-Obama and anti-incumbent bumper stickers. Make sure you wear the blinders issued to you when you voted.
If you are worried about being lost in the crowd and seperated from fellow libbies, wear your Obama T-shirt. You will be easy to find--everyone within sight will be pointing at you and laughing.
You will be in the company of several hundred thousand people that think that burning fuel is a GOOD thing. This is not the place to bring up "global warming" or AlGore.
You may feel insecure by the absence of a central authority. You will not see law enforcement officers there. People attending take care of their own problems--no waiting for government to do it.
Unlike government programs, you will be expected to PAY for food and other services--they will not be provided for free. I know it is a foreign concept, but you actually have to have your OWN MONEY to pay for this. You can't steal it from some "rich person."
Of course, the entire warning is in good fun. Go and enjoy yourselves!
