Snyder’s Drug Stores will close or sell 19 of its stores this month in a move to downsize in the current challenging economic environment.
Nineteen of the 47 corporate stores will be sold or closed by the end of February. The affected stores were underperforming, according to the company.
"We regret the impact this will have on customers and employees, but our decision to downsize is necessary and prudent, given the economic downturn," said President Dave Schwartz.
Snyder’s officials said the stores were in areas where pharmacy care could be provided at a nearby location.
Snyder’s 30 independently owned stores throughout the upper Midwest are unaffected and will continue to operate as usual.
The Minneapolis-based drug store first opened its doors in 1928 as a cigar and tobacco shop.
Stores that will be closed:

I don't think that is too much of a surprise, when Walgreens came to town something had to give.

Every closing is a a big loss to the community. The downward spiral of the economy is getting out of control.

Indeed, even if it was inevitable as was suggested, that is sad.

If that list is complete, it looks like my old Snyder's at Lexington and Larpenteur survived. Dingy, smaller, and less staffed.
I saw a microcosmic version of this play out in Old Albert Lea. George Jacobs and the Wallgreens was where everybody went. For pills. And so on.
Snyder's has always played third fiddle to the Wallgreens

I have many memories from my youth of that store - buying hot wheels, sister buying her counting eggs for her playhouse. I think we were 8 and 4 back then. I'm 38 now. It was a staple of the community.
Sorry to hear it's leaving.

Dick Cheeney just gave an interview, and he said we are doomed if we stop waring, torturing and lying. (why care about little things like your job or place to shop. When the real problem is terrorism)
Comments by others, questioned Cheeney's sanity. With both sides of the isle, saying cheeney is unrecognisable, from the guy he was before 2001.
