Lord knows, when I was in the army I loved my M-16.  I could tare it down, clean it, and put it back together again with my eyes covered.  For over a year I did everything with it.  It never left my side, except for an occational shower.  Funny how all of that come back to one after reading an article about a man robbing the bank in Freeborn, armed with an assault rifle.  I know that Charleton Heston says it is my God Given right, maybe even a duty to have one of these loaded and at my disposal, but I know first hand what one of these things can do.  Because of that, I have chosen not to live the rest of my life with a loaded assault weapon by my side.  I just wish they weren't available for the casual bank robber to conceal and carry.  Boy, I bet he had fun letting out a burst or two as he drove away from the bank in his VW.

He was upset the man almost killed his deputies, but had sympathy for him.

"I feel real bad for him, but he's made a real bad decision and he has to deal with consequences," he said. Harig said he wants to understand why he did what he did, and wants to get him help so it never happens again.

Quote from sheriff Harig in the Albert Lea Tribune Article

This guy robs a bank and shoots it out with the cops and our sheriff wants to understand why he did it and wants to get him some help so it never happens again.

Here's a better idea.  How about the courts do their job and lock the guy in a cell until he's to old to carry an assault rifle into a bank.  Then we don't have to worry about him trying to kill anymore of our deputies either.

No, this was a guy who he knew from high school days and was able to talk down. This is a symptom of a deeper problem....most likely meth, but could be mere hopelessness.

I hope we learn something from this experience, as to why a long time resident in his 40's would just loose it one day.

Having had a previous shooting incident, and a history of mental disturbance, how does one end up in possession of an AK-47?  I don't think that this is what the founding fathers had in mind with the 2 Amendment.  So how does such a thing happen, and what type of concequences are there for those who helped him aquire it?

Obviously nobody wants people with mental problems to own any sort of gun.  But I have never seen any reasonable solution to stop them from getting them.  You could ban all guns and ammo, and they'd just be the next illegal imported item, resulting in even more violence.  You can have all sorts of checks, but if you buy from a private person that doesn't help. What would work?
