BREAKING NEWS: Albert Lea High School evacuated
A gas smell in the hallways at Albert Lea High School prompted the evacuation of the building this morning.
All students, faculty and staff walked over to adjacent Riverland Community College while the high school was checked for a gas leak.
Look to the Albert Lea Tribune for updates as events develop.

I suppose they'll be asking us for money for this also! Maybe the low bid gasline union's are giving way and all need to be replaced.

Damn, and the school is out of the builders' warranty... Goes to show what happens when the job goes to the lowest bidder!

They will ask for a third levy which if "not approved will result in the loss of many necessary events and services" that the last levy was supposed to pay for.

I would be more worried about the gas leak being investigated by the fire dept. The same fire dept that had difficulties putting out a house fire and it took 3 hours and all their trucks, the same fire dept that couldnt get the meat packing fire under control before it "took off". Dont get me wrong I have respect for the job they do but with the cronyism that has gotten the men into those positions it makes me wonder if they have all the qualifications they need to perform the job. My wife just posed an interesting question, "I wonder if they could have gotten it under control faster if the address was out in indian hills or up in shoreland heights?" Doesnt leave me with a warm fuzzy feeling of safety.

I would like to know why they let 1000 kids gather in one central location to get their coats with a gas leak going on? Sounds like it could have been pretty dangerous to me!! Just think all of them in one spot and the gas ignites!

According to the superintendent on the news this morning, there was a "smell" of gas that they didn't determine to be dangerous, just "needed to be investigated" and that is why they allowed the kiddies to get their coats.
It supposedly turned out to be, according to him, "a burner that was burning too rich and then an intake vent was drawing it into the building." That is what he said on "School Talks" this morning at 0640 or so on KAAL-TV.

I have to add to Wolfies comments. From what I understand we have a fire department made up of 17 people to the tune of almost 1 million dollars a year in salary and benifits! We have a chief that has never ridden on a fire truck or put on gear or touched a fire hose to the tune of $80,000 a year salary and benifts. We have a fire captain with a bad back drawing full salary sitting at a desk for $60,000 plus. We have 3 fire captains plus 3 assistant captains and 12 regular fire fighters. It would be very interesting to hear how Austins fire deptartment functions since they are all volunteers?? I am sure the service they give is the same if not better and a whole lot cheaper!!!
